Sonic Soundings

/ Venice Trajectories is a form of intervention, a sonic counterpart to the 57th Venice Biennale. The practice in nautical or navigational charting where a sonic signal is released in anticipation of an echo is used as a metaphor to (re)map the Biennale through fluid encounters, borderless connections and archipelagic thinking. The project, mediated through an app, frames the National Pavilions and other projects as a constellation of islands, whose connections, both visible and under the radar, are articulated as sound reverberating in the alleyways, canals, campi, palazzi and pavilions. Whether diasporic, anti-state, trans-national, interpersonal, or inter-galactic these sonic objects seeded across Venice, echo and resonate, intervening into art world spheres, gated routes, daily life, and the geography of the city. Contributors come from across Europe and Asia and reflect a diverse approach to Venice, the Biennale, the current global crisis over borders and citizenship, but also to the medium of sound. Soundscapes, audio walking guides, narrative encounters and acoustic interventions, all reminders of the ability of sound to both permeate and articulate space, and redefine meaning and representation. Sonic Soundings / Venice Trajectories is a geo-locational sound tour and is experienced in Venice via ‘ECHOES’ a free app downloaded onto listeners’ smartphones. So, as we hit the final week of the 57th Venice Biennale, Sonic Soundings / Venice Trajectories will have its own closing events! Piggy-backing on the Diaspora Pavilions closing events, I will be running some collective listing sessions/walking tours this Saturday. The longer tour will be in the evening starting at St Marks Square and ending in the Giardini... or a late night bar in Garibaldi. Do come! Download the app first though....

For the programme of events please see ICF's page:

APP FAQS:

Just a note - if you are using an iPhone and want to find the project on the app, please search for "sonicsoundings" all one word. Android has much more tolerance and you can use "sonicsoundings" or "sonic soundings". If you are in Venice, the project comes up at the top of the list.

Downloading: do this with WIFI and download all the project files. GPS is erratic in Venice (the canals I've been told can skew the signal!), so keep your data on for a better signal. The sound files will already be on your phone so you will not be using data to listen to the works. Any issues, close the app, and restart!

We spent 3 days walking around Venice, plotting, and re-plotting ... churches, alleyways, bridges (several of them!), historic monuments, wells and fountains, biennale approaches and entrances and of course, The Diaspora Pavilion where some of this began.

Adam Patterson's piece 'Tourism Is The Work Of The Devil' 'leads' you to the Pavilion, while Barby Asante's piece reminds us of those lost, but not forgotten: 'A Declaration Of Independence: For Ama. For Aba. For Khadija And Mary'.

Khadija Saye's work is all so very present in the Pavilion.
Her absence also.

Listening to Cross Pollinat/In Venice in St Marks Square after heavy rain - August 2017.

The work is a collaboration between Geetanjali Sayal / Juhi Saklani / Anshul Kapoor and is located across the whole of St Marks Square.

"The co-relations of the piece to the surroundings in the Piazza San Marco invite you to have your own imaginary perception of the reformation of the Square, through the process of flooding, alteration of edges, boundaries, the fluidic relationship between land and water, human and space which can be ‘scaped’ over again so that the earlier perceptions are less visible physically and mentally."
