The phrase 寂灭为乐 (jìmiè wéi lè) means that the only everlasting joy is self annihilation (into Nirvāna), thus stopping the iron chain of Pratītyasamutpāda, the dependent origination.

Mountain dwellings are one of scholars' main topics throughout the most part of Chinese history. The voluntary and solitary retreat among mountain ridges could represent a kind of unspoken dissent towards a corrupt government or a newly founded barbarian dynasty. It could also represent many officials' longing for a solitary dwelling far from the imperial court, seeking a deeper spirituality, seeking the Path (道 dào). Poteva anche rappresentare il desiderio di molti funzionari di ritirarsi a vita privata lontano dagli intrighi di corte, alla ricerca di una spiritualità più profonda, alla ricerca della Via (道 dào). Well, this was just a try. I tried to paint a river, a dead tree and some moss all in a row. I am not satisfied this time, but at least I used a new format!

Ok, questo era solo un esperimento. Ho trovato a disegnare un fiume, un albero morto e il muschio tutto in una volta. Ammetto che non sono soddisfatto, ma almeno ho sperimentato il nuovo formato di carta che ho comprato!

The Prajñāpāramitā Hṛdaya Sūtra, or Sutra of the Heart of the Perfection of Wisdom, is the best renowned and most frequently recited sutra of Mahayana Buddhism. It states one of the main Buddhist principles, that is emptiness: every phenomenon is ultimately empty. Cause of its shortness, it is the sutra that perfectly fits calligraphy. I tried a new brush and a new style; in the second page I left a pretty wide blank space to convey this idea of emptiness. Spot the character for Buddha (佛 fó), it is the biggest and the nicest one. Condensa uno dei massimi principi buddhisti, la vacuità: tutti i fenomeni sono vuoti in ultima istanza, privi di sostanza. Per via della sua brevità questo sutra ben si adatta alle arti calligrafiche. Stavolta ho provato un nuovo pennello e di conseguenza un nuovo stile; nella seconda pagina ho lasciato molto spazio vuoto per trasmettere un maggior senso di "vacuità" appunto. The word 缘分 (yuánfen) comes from the Buddhist concept 缘, which is often mistranslated as "predestination". 缘 represents the root cause of a phenomenon, the essenti reason why something is as it is. In everyday speech it is used to express amazement for a set of "coincidences" (e.g. to meet by chance someone everyday at the very same time, or to meet a person we dreamt of). It is used also to express how well-matched two lovers are: 很有缘分. ⁣

La parola 缘分 deriva dal concetto buddhista 缘, che viene erroneamente tradotto con "predestinazione". 缘 rappresenta la radice della causa di un fenomeno, il motivo essenziale per cui una cosa è come è. Nel linguaggio quotidiano è però possibile utilizzarla per esprimere stupore di fronte ad una serie di "coincidenze" (come ad esempio incontrare per caso una persona ogni giorno alla stessa ora, o ricevere la telefonata di qualcuno che ci era apparso in sogno). Lo si può esclamare anche per dire quanto due partner stiano bene assieme, come coppia: 很有缘分.⁣

The second fan I post here actually is the first one that I made, as you can see from some flaws in the characters. I wrote the final verses of "Crossing the river" (涉江 shè jiāng), a poem by Qu Yuan, Who lived during the Warring States Period. Qu Yuan is considered one of the most important Chinese poets, since the ritual su***de he committed to protest against the corruption at that time. Following his death, a lot of legends and traditions gave birth to what today is the Dragon boat festival (June 25th this year). DM for info and private commissions! 🐉⁣

Il secondo ventaglio che pubblico è il primo che ho fatto, lo si vede da alcune rigidità nei caratteri. Ho riportato gli ultimi versi di "Attraverso il fiume" (涉江 shè jiāng), un poema di Qu Yuan del periodo degli Stati Combattenti. Qu Yuan è considerato uno dei maggiori poeti cinesi, anche a causa del suicidio rituale con cui decise di lanciare una protesta contro la corruzione dell'epoca e di abbandonare il mondo. In seguito alla sua morte, una serie di leggende diedero origine a quella che oggi è la festa di Duanwu, conosciuta come festa delle barche drago, che quest'anno cade il 25 giugno. Rocks and mountains (石 shí, 山 shān) are very popular subjects as well. The stillness, the sense of stability, their bodies shrouded in mist... They are very complex, rendered by many overlapping layers (let the sheet dry before laying out the next ink coat!). It would be nice to intertwine literary verses with these rocky peaks, but here I preferred to emphasize the gap between mountain ridges by even omitting the signature, which actually is an essential part of a calligraphy. Le rocce e le montagne (石 shí, 山 shān) sono un altro soggetto fondamentale nel monocromo Chan. La calma e il senso di stabilità, il loro perdersi nella distanza... Sono soggetti molto complessi, resi da moltissimi strati sovrapposti (fate asciugare il foglio prima di passare la successiva mano d'inchiostro!). È bello intrecciare versi di poeti celebri a queste cime rocciose, ma qui ho preferito dare risalto al vuoto omettendo persino la firma, di solito parte essenziale della calligrafia.
