THE FIVE-LAYERED SELF
One of the central questions of spirituality is “Who am I?” Nondual Saiva Ta**ra (NŚT) explores this through five layers of self:
0. VATSU: Objects. The outset most layer is Identifying with what we own (“I am rich” or “I am poor”). Love what you have, but don’t let it define you.
1.DEHA: The body. Statements like “I am fat” or “I am thin” reflect this. We are more than our physical form.
2.CITTA:Heart-mind. Awareness contracted into emotions and thoughts (“I am intelligent” or “I am stupid”). Thoughts and emotions are both vibrations.
3. PRANA: Vital energy. Statements like “I feel alive” or “I feel drained.” Prana connects body and mind through the breath.
4. ŚŪNYA: The void. Accessed through deep meditation. Identifying with the peaceful void (“I am the transcendent void”) can lead to escapism. But a real yogi has realized that the divine is in everything.
5. CIT: The center, the essence. The innermost center of being is the non-dual, non-local consciousness that goes beyond all other layers, making awareness of them possible. Identifying with this layer isn’t through words but experience: “I am a blissfully free, conscious awareness”; “I am perfect and complete as I am”; “I am divine.”
