🎹 Faculty Spotlight: Thiago de Freitas 🎹

Thiago has been with FIO for several years as a collaborative pianist and music director, and we're so excited to see him again this summer! He'll be serving as the music director for this season's one-act operas. Thiago is the collaborative pianist for the Music Department at the Arts Institute at the Federal University of Uberlândia in Brazil.

🇮🇹 Join us this summer in gorgeous Urbania! 🇮🇹

Urbania is a charming medieval town located in the Marche region, between the Apennine Mountains and the Adriatic Sea. In Urbania, you will see many historic architectural monuments and museums (be sure to visit the mummies!), as well as the beautiful 19th-century Teatro Bramante, all within walking distance.

Urbania’s residents are extremely welcoming and receive visitors with open doors and open hearts. Walking along the cobblestones of the town, you will have the opportunity not only to practice your Italian with the locals but also to fully experience Italian culture, food, and hospitality.

It’s been a minute since we’ve introduced our wonderful partners at 🇮🇹

CSI is our home away from home at FIO, and their incredible team plays an enormous role in our festival:

• Italian classes: CSI teachers provide our students with 60 hours of immersive Italian class over the course of the festival. (Your class may be eligible for course credit through your university!)
• Venue spaces: CSI’s building is our headquarters, and we use their beautiful spaces for rehearsals, performances, masterclasses, and lessons/coachings/practice rooms, throughout the festival.
• Coordinating: CSI coordinates housing, helps plan trips, works with Urbania, and more! They help us ensure that our festival operates smoothly and that our students’ experiences in Urbania are truly magical.

We’re so endlessly grateful to our CSI family and can’t wait for you to meet them this summer!

🎶 Singers, it's not too late to submit your applications for FIO ITALIA 2026! 🎶

Join us this summer to gain invaluable performance experience, study Italian language and culture, and learn from our internationally renowned faculty! Over the course of our festival, singers will:

• perform in fully-staged productions
• sing in public recitals and concerts
• receive 8 voice lessons
• receive 8 coaching sessions with native Italian coaches
• sing in at least one masterclass
• take sixty hours of intensive Italian language class through our partners at Centro Studi Italiani (which may be eligible for course credit at your university)
• and so much more!

🎭 Faculty Spotlight: Dr. Joshua May 🎭

Tenor, director, and voice professor Dr. May has already brought several productions to life at FIO - swipe to see a few of his amazing creations! Currently, Dr. May is the Voice Area Coordinator and Director of Opera Activities at in Columbus, GA. We're thrilled to welcome him back this summer to direct our production of Puccini's masterpiece, Madama Butterfly.

FIO is accepting applications for its 2026 collaborative pianist program! Come hone your skills, immerse yourself in Italian language and culture, and learn from our fabulous piano faculty! Our pianists:

• sit in on coachings with Italian vocal coaches

🎼 Faculty Spotlight: John Massaro 🎼

Maestro John Massaro has spent several summers at FIO, and we're thrilled that he's joining us again in 2026 to conduct Puccini's masterpiece "Madama Butterfly." Maestro Massaro is an award-winning composer, arranger, and conductor; and he's the Principal Conductor for the Phoenix Opera and the Southwest Vocal Competition. We're so excited for him to be joining us again this year!

🎶 Faculty Spotlight: Dr. Patrick McNally 🎶

Another new face joining us this season is baritone Dr. Patrick McNally! Dr. McNally is an Assistant Professor of Voice and the Director of Opera at East Texas A&M University. This summer, he'll be teaching voice lessons at FIO as well as stage directing our Opera Scenes program. We're so thrilled to welcome him to our team!
