Milan's International Modern and Contemporary Art Fair

miart is a fair where contemporary art, modern art and limited edition design dialogue with each other to explore the relationships between the past and present of creativity. Thanks to its careful selection of international galleries, miart is the Italian fair that presents the public with the widest array of works, from early 20th century art through to the creations of the most recent generations. With its numerous different sections and its rich programme of awards, every spring miart brings an international audience of collectors, curators, museum directors, artists, designers, art lovers and journalists to Milan. The 27rd edition of miart will once again be the catalyst of the Milan Art Week, a weeklong series of exhibition openings, special events, and performances, involving the major public and private institutions as well as the city's foundations and galleries, no-profit and artist-run spaces, all entities that make Milan one of the international capitals of modern art and contemporary creativity. In Milan, MUDEC - Museo delle Culture presents an ambitious and scholarly exhibition project exploring the relationship between Henri Matisse and the cultures he encountered during his studies and travels beyond Europe. "Matisse. The World in a Room" addresses a central and long-overlooked question: how African, Islamic, Russian, Pacific, and Chinese art shaped Matisse’s artistic language from within, redefining the very boundaries of Western modernism.

Curated by Ellen McBreen and Chiara Gatti, the exhibition is structured into 8 sections and brings together around 100 works, including paintings, works on paper, and sculptures from prestigious international institutions: the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Pierre and Tana Matisse Foundation Collection in New York, the MoMA, the Musée de l’Orangerie, the Musée Picasso, the Musée d’Orsay, the Musée du Quai Branly, the Bargello in Florence, the MUDEC, and others. These works are accompanied by a rare and rich collection of objects and fabrics – including a personal collection especially dear to Matisse – on loan from the Musée Matisse in Nice, the Museum of Civilizations in Rome, and other institutions, reconstructing the fabric of Matisse’s dialogues with the art and design of other geographies. Until October 31, 2026, Andrew Kreps Gallery presents an exhibition of new works by Andrea Bowers, the artist’s sixth solo exhibition with the gallery opening on September 18 at 22 Cortlandt Alley, New York.

Bowers’ practice is equally engaged in the activism of the present, as it is with the history of protest and direct action. Documenting the ways in which activists speak up for social justice issues, her work forms a living archive of the ways in which feminist, labor, and environmental causes intersect, and impact one another. Including new drawings on paper and cardboard, neon and LED works, and a film program, curated with Lindsay Mofford, of documentaries and shorts made from the 1970s until now, the exhibition responds to the precarity of our current moment as the US approach the 2026 midterm elections.

Museo Diocesano di Milano presents the exhibition "Werner Bischof. Point of View", which, 110 years after his birth, offers a comprehensive overview of the life and work of the Swiss photographer, one of the most important photojournalists of the 20th century.

A member of the Magnum Photos agency since 1949, Bischof stood out for his deeply humanistic approach to photojournalism, capable of combining documentary rigor with poetic intensity. The exhibition features 200 original vintage photographs, accompanied by a selection of contact sheets and a documentary which, with a perspective that remains extraordinarily relevant today, narrate history with empathy, attentiveness, and profound respect for human dignity.

The upcoming edition will be structured around three Sections — Main Section Contemporary and Modern, Close Up. Solo Show and Conversations, and New Voices — complemented by a vast program of activities developed in close dialogue with the city.

Continuing a longstanding dialogue and collaboration, Nathalie Djurberg and Hans Berg return to Gió Marconi Gallery, transforming the gallery spaces into a landscape suspended between apparition and desire, memory and imagination.

Immersed in semi-darkness, the exhibition "Song of the Sirens" unfolds through a series of stop-motion animations. Each film revolves around a single oversized sculptural element—a nose, an ear, a pair of buttocks—forms modelled in clay and rendered with a marble-like appearance, isolated and enlarged, deliberately altered and reinterpreted to enhance their evocative resonance.

A journey through art and fashion, where imagination, identity, and desire merge into a single visual language. Featuring more than 200 works and archival materials—including paintings, drawings, photographs, garments, films, jewelry, and objects—the exhibition "Dalí and Fashion" at Palazzo Reale Milano explores the relationship between the Catalan artist and the world of fashion, revealing a lesser-known yet remarkably rich dimension of his creative practice.

Throughout Dalí's work, a rich symbolic imagery connected to the world of fashion recurs: shoes, dresses, jackets, gloves, and jewelry become key elements of his Surrealist vocabulary. A pioneer in shaping new aesthetic codes, Dalí collaborated with fashion designers, photographers, and leading couture houses, redefining the boundaries between art and fashion while demonstrating an extraordinary ability to anticipate and harness the dynamics of this ever-evolving world.

Curated by Montse Aguer, Laura Bartolomé Roviras and Judith Clark, the exhibition spans painting, sculpture, and design, moving from the mannequin to the body to reveal Dalí's profound influence on the fashion imagination. It documents the artist's constant drive for innovation and creative freedom, highlighting the visionary spirit that shaped his entire artistic career. On view until January, 31, 2027.

miart milano's programme will extend beyond the exhibition space, creating opportunities for encounters and collaboration with the art system and with the city. During the days of the fair, the event’s presence across the city will also develop through four curatorial projects.

✨ In & Out. Citywide will connect miart milano with the city’s cultural heritage, offering participating galleries the opportunity to create an installation inside a Milanese public museum.

✨ On Film will be dedicated to the language of moving image, with a curated programme that will allow video works to be presented both at the fair and in other locations across the city.

✨ Entryways is a diffused project featuring large-scale site-specific installations throughout the fair. Conceived to mark key strategic points along the visitor journey, the installations are dedicated to leading international contemporary artists.

✨ Editions, Publishers & Magazines will for the first time be a project with a precise curatorial approach, featuring a space specifically designed by architects and a route dedicated to the most interesting research in contemporary publishing.

In Milan, VOENA is showcasing the work of two pioneers of art and design: Carol Rama and Rick Owens.

Rama's visceral works are displayed alongside the sculptural furniture of Rick Owens, selected and staged by Michèle Lamy, a meeting of radical originals where painting and object circle the same charged ground: eros, the body, and decay. Conceived by Marco Frignati for the intimate atmosphere of VOENA's Milan gallery, the exhibition DIALOGUES stages a dialogue of rubber and hide, bone and prosthesis that collapses the distance between art and design, and proposes that these two visionaries, both driven by transgression rather than technique, arrived at resonant conclusions by independent but convergent routes.

The new edition of Milan’s international modern and contemporary art fair will be divided into three sections, designed to offer the public an atlas-like overview of global artistic research, presented through a renewed selection of galleries.

✨ Main Section Contemporary and Modern / Atlas of Arts will welcome the most prestigious galleries in the global modern and contemporary art scene, highlighting institutions that have been supporting artists, the creation of major projects and their international dissemination for many years.

✨ New Voices will be dedicated to younger galleries and the latest trends in contemporary art, with site-specific projects conceived specifically for the fair.

✨ Close Up. Solo Shows and Conversations will present monographic projects, or dialogues between two or more artists, created by a single gallery or through collaboration between two galleries.

In Milan, Thaddaeus Ropac presents "Leoncillo. Perché più bruci" – the Italian sculptor’s first solo exhibition with the gallery and the first chapter of a trilogy dedicated to his work, developed in collaboration with the Leoncillo Foundation and curated by Lorenzo Fiorucci, Alberto Salvadori and Azalea Seratoni. Tracing Leoncillo’s sustained engagement with clay as a vital vehicle for the expressive ambitions of modern art, the exhibition brings together sculptures and works on paper which traverse the four decades of his career.

The form of the tree offered Leoncillo the possibility to blend a deep-rooted investment in nature with a poetic conception of the body, establishing a foundation for his artistic vision. From his early drawings of olive trees in the 1930s across the diverse artistic languages he subsequently explored, this motif remained a constant point of departure in his practice. It finds expression in the pastoral, mythological forms of his early sculptures, laden with literary references, and, later, in the improvisational, highly gestural abstract sculptures of his final decade, where fissures, splits and grooves become sites of material transformation. Leoncillo was not striving for mimetic representation; rather, he understood clay as a living substance that bore the potential of both destruction and renewal, and sculpture, by extension, as a process of continual becoming.
