Voices Of Women

Voices Of Women What does it mean to be a woman? Raquel is a solo female traveller and photographer, capturing the untold stories and the beauty of being a woman. Raquel

By sharing photographic stories, Voices Of Women is my perspective as a solo female traveller on how women across the world, live. I want to showcase life through their eyes, their personal hardships and in that way to raise awareness on gender inequality issues and what it takes to be a woman. Which kind of challenges do women face? What aspirations do they have? And more importantly, which aspir

ations can’t woman have? What is that thin line that separates men from women? This project is also my personal journey being a solo female traveller, sharing my personal experiences, good or bad and hopefully with this I would inspire more women out there. So please do leave your comments, write to me and share to help create a positive change. Big hugs and much love!

"While traveling solo, this sense of being a woman, as opposing to be a man, changed just because I was constantly reminded that I was more vulnerable to danger than them. At the same time, I came to realize that all of those basic rights I took for granted in my country, were not even an aspiration for most women in Asia. Something as simple as being treated equally and having the same opportunities to grow as a human being didn’t exist." Raquel, The First Voice

For a long time in my life, gender inequality didn’t exist as a concept. It was just a feeling of unease that I felt about several aspects of my life. A feeling that I always interpreted as me being wrong.

Later on though, I understood that such a feeling was the result of a cultural heritage passed on to me by past generations and society. This uneasiness with our label, on the other hand, is a common feeling among women but it is very hard to put into words and share with others.

Did you experience the same?

These days I have been busy writing for our website, which will launch by the end of the month.🤞 One of the first pages I wrote is about my own story and how I ended up doing this project. This is how it starts:

“Once upon a time there was a princess that was told a fairy tale, however it felt more like a scary movie. Does this sense of uneasiness ring a bell to you?

Back than, my life just felt wrong. I felt wrong. No, I didn’t dream of a charming prince, I didn’t dream of a white dress or of a Barbie dream house. The fairy tale was not doing it for me…”

The only two people that read it pointed out that these words may make other women – women who dream of starting a family and are happy with it – feel judged. I did not expect such comments as I am only sharing my experience and how I felt about it. 😯

What do you think? Do you feel judged by my words? Your opinion is important! 😉

Talk in Turin (Italy), 2018 January 12th

The one grabbing the microphone is Manuela Manera, one of the most amazing women I met in the past few months. We met thanks to a friend we have in common. After our encounter she not only arranged a meeting with the NGO she works with but also spammed her friends trying to help me organize more talks in Italy. Thanks to her, we managed to host talks in Castelfranco and Venice last year.
She did an amazing introduction to my presentation, explaining to the audience how the art of storytelling can be so powerful to raise awareness.
Manuela is one of the people that makes Turin feels home for me. She treated me like a friend right from the first day.
Thank you Manuela!

Here is a picture of Voices of Women’s first event of the year! Next to me you can see Laura Onofri and Manuela Manera, both members of the Italian NGO, Se Non Ora Quando?
I want to publically say thank you to them for standing there for us!
They kindly had a meeting with me last year and were super supportive of my project. Thanks to them we managed to organize a second talk in Turin, Italy in this amazing venue called Circolo dei Leitori.
I am now taking a break from events and focusing on getting our website done! More on this soon!

She knew she could help other women and that's what she did...

In Spain, companies can legally undergo collective dismissals of their employees when they face a financially difficult situation. This is a way to make hiring and dismissals procedures cheaper and more flexible for companies. But what happens to the employees?

Collective dismissals have been a close reality to María. Although finding a job was never too difficult for her, she couldn’t help but wonder what would happen with the women she works with, who are older and perhaps less educated. Women who have kids to raise and loans to pay. Women who are 50 years old and probably spent the past 10 years or more doing the same job. Women who didn’t have the chance to continue learning and developing new skills because they were busy running a family. Women who, because of their age, will have a hard time finding a job as they now have to compete with younger professionals who are more up to date with what employers demand. Women who will also be judged by their gender.

Even though María is not affected by this problem she decided to do something. But how could she help these women?
At the office, her fellow colleagues often come to her asking for help as they struggle to work with Excel. As an actuary, María knows this software well and spends quite a bit of time teaching them. So that was it! María came up with the idea of organizing some Excel workshops targeting women in their fifties who struggle to find a job. Adding Excel as a skill to their CV would at least improve their chances to find a new job.

So when she shared her idea with me not sure about it, it was obvious to me that I had to help her make this coming true. How did I help María? First, I told her how wonderful this idea was and that she should definitely do it. Often people have great ideas but they are afraid of going for it and need some external support. I needed the same before starting Voices of Women. Secondly, I helped Maria get in touch with organizations that could potentially support her either by providing the facilities or promoting the workshop. María’s idea is the perfect example of a project Voices of Women can support.

What about you? How are you helping women around you?

Maria, Madrid (Spain)

We forgot to claim the right to be different…

“During the first feminist battles in the beginning of the 20th century, women’s priority was to be equal to men, which was often mistaken by many as the need to be actually like men. To assert themselves, women pretended to be men - using their clothing and behaviour - abdicating and mortifying the right ‘to be a woman’ that they claimed.

We fought for equality, equal rights for everyone, forgetting to claim the right to be different, as a value in itself, as a treasure, a peculiarity.

In the 90’s, in Italy, we evolved gradually from the concept of equality to the concept of gender differences. I remember that I was resistant to it. I was afraid of losing ground and of giving myself away. It was a delicate and difficult step; to accept and then impose, being proudly diverse. This transition was necessary though.

Equal rights for all, including the right to be different.”
