Sessions with Arthur Levy

Lessons: The key to great vocal technique lies in the exercises a singer masters with their teacher. Arthur Levy is a master technician, with an exceptional ear for even the smallest nuances in vocal production.

In recent high-level work with our two artists, Jessica Gu focused on starting each attack of the arpeggio with a consonant for clean adduction on the onset, while bringing in the head voice with the ‘OU’ vowel which sets up the very high notes in a great position. Meanwhile, Sarah Yeates worked on singing with a full column of sound, then re-attacking with a mezzo piano, and gradually crescendoing into the brightness of the vowel, achieving both clarity and resonance.

Sessions with John Fisher + Charles Styles

Lesson: Keep the voice aligned in the same column of resonance, without pushing extra air when the position changes on the top note. In the passaggio, treat the F on an ‘Ah’ vowel with a slightly more Italianate vowel, allowing the transition to the A♭ to remain in line and reducing any sense of a gear shift. Maintaining this same direction sets you up to execute the ‘up and over’ approach into the high note of the phrase with ease and continuity.

Masterclass with Cheryl Studer + Katie Smith
Lesson: Sing each phrase with true legato, carrying vibration and energy seamlessly from one note to the next. Avoid allowing the sound to become dry or secco—maintain continuous airflow and resonance so the tone remains alive. Shape the [i] vowel into a fuller, rounder ‘ih’ to add warmth and depth, supporting the line and enhancing the sense of connection. This approach preserves the musical flow, enriches the vocal color, and keeps the listener engaged throughout the phrase.
