Buon anno da Domus Artificis,
riproduzione di un altro tesoro ritrovato nel fiume Ljubljanica (Slovenia). Si tratta di un gladio Mainz datato nel periodo tardo augusteo (inizio I sec. d.C.).
Il ritrovamento è composto dalla parte superiore della lama (dal codolo fino alla vita), da una placca decorativa in argento massiccio parzialmente dorata, due fascette di sospensione anch’esse in argento massiccio e parzialmente dorate ed un anello in argento facente parte di una delle fascette.
Dell’immanicatura sono rimasti l’elsa e il pomolo in legno rivestiti di una lamina in argento.
Per terminare la ricostruzione ho utilizzato le informazioni relative ad un gladio dello stesso periodo e ritrovato sempre nel fiume Ljubljanica, appartenente allo stesso ritrovamento, riprendendo in particolare la forma della lama e il puntale del fodero.
La replica è costituita da una lama in acciaio k720, ricostruita con forma a foglia secondo la variante classica dell’epoca in questione, con un immanicatura caratterizzata da elsa e pomolo in legno rivestiti in argento e il ma**co in osso.
Il fodero è in legno rivestito in pelle blu con elementi in argento (gr. 300 circa), mentre telaio e puntale sono in bronzo argentato.
Ciò che caratterizza questo gladio è sicuramente la placca con decorazioni a foglia di acanto, vite ed uccelli, il fondo è cesellato e dorato (Miks 769,1 – tav.191).
Le fascette di sospensione sono in argento e dorate sul fronte. La decorazione è a rilievo con ornamento a foglia di acanto centrale e linee ondulate tra le modanature orizzontali. Anche gli anelli sono in argento con modanature.

reproduction of another treasure found in the Ljubljanica river (Slovenia). This is a Mainz gladius dated to the late Augustan period (early 1st century AD).
The find is composed of the upper part of the blade (from the tang to the waist), a decorative plate in partially gilded solid silver, two suspension bands also in solid silver and partially gilded and a silver ring which is part of one of the cable ties.
All that remains of the handle are the wooden hilt and pommel covered in silver foil.
To complete the reconstruction I used the information relating to a gladius from the same period and also found in the Ljubljanica river, belonging to the same discovery, taking in particular the shape of the blade and the tip of the sheath.
The replica consists of a K720 steel blade, reconstructed with a leaf shape according to the classic variant of the era in question, with a handle characterized by a wooden hilt and pommel covered in silver and a bone handle.
The sheath is made of wood covered in blue leather with silver elements (approximately 300 g), while the frame and tip are in silvered bronze.
What characterizes this gladius is certainly the plaque with acanthus leaf, vine and bird decorations, the bottom is chiseled and gilded (Miks 769.1 – plate 191).
The suspension bands are silver and golden on the front. The decoration is in relief with a central acanthus leaf ornament and wavy lines between the horizontal moldings. The rings are also made of silver with moldings.
