Sydney Ann Beck left this world on March 22nd, but the way she lived will stay with me forever.
Sydney was someone I didn’t just know…I lived with her, loved her, and learned so much from her. People talk about saints like they’re distant, untouchable figures…but Sydney is the closest thing to one I’ve ever known in real life.
I’ve never met someone who had so little and was so willing to give so much. She gave from her heart, from her home, from whatever she had. Whether it was her missions to other countries or the boxes she carefully saved in her room to one day send to children in Haiti, she lived her life by a simple truth:
“I live simply so that others can simply live.”
She raised her children through incredibly difficult times, carrying more than most ever should…..and still, she showed up. For them. For everyone. She listened without judgment. She loved without conditions. She gave without hesitation.
And she laughed. A lot.
To me, she was Saint Sydney. A reminder of what a human being can be when they choose generosity, compassion, and selflessness every single day…….while still sneaking in a little joy…and more than a little sheet cake.
I will miss you terribly, Sydney.
I will miss your smile.
I will miss your laugh.
I will miss your secret stashes of sheet cake.
Thank you for showing me what it means to truly give….and how much more I have to learn.
