The putipù is a musical instrument traditionally used in folk music of Southern Italy, sometimes called caccavella or cupa cupa (see my previous reel).

The CUPA CUPA or also known as the putipù is a traditional friction drum from Matera used in folk music. The instrument consists of a resonant chamber covered with a stretched animal skin or membrane and in the center there is a wooden stick. To play it, the musician repeatedly rubs the stick with a damp cloth or wet hand, which causes the membrane to vibrate and produce a deep, rhythmic, onomatopoeic cup-cup bass sound. (From the web)
