The Sun Temple at Modhera,on the bank of the Pushpavati River, Mehsana district, Gujarat, India is a Hindu temple dedicated to the solar deity Surya . It was built after 1026-27 CE during the reign of Bhima I of the Solanki dynasty.
The temple is a testament to the skill and artistry of the Solanki dynasty, and it is built in the Maru-Gurjara style of architecture, which is characterized by its use of sandstone and its intricate carvings.
The temple complex has three components: Gūḍhamanḍapa, the shrine hall; Sabhamanḍapa, the assembly hall and Kunḍa, the reservoir. The halls have intricately carved exterior and pillars.
The main entrance to the temple is through a large gateway, which is decorated with carvings of gods, goddesses, and animals. The gateway leads to the Sabhamandap, or assembly hall, which is a large hall with a high ceiling. The Sabhamandap is supported by pillars, which are also decorated with carvings. The Gūḍhamanḍapa, or shrine hall, is located behind the Sabhamandap. The Gūḍhamanḍapa is a smaller hall, which is dedicated to the worship of Surya. The Gūḍhamanḍapa is also supported by pillars, which are decorated with carvings.
In front of the temple is a large water tank, known as the Rama K***a. The Rama K***a is a rectangular tank, which is surrounded by a colonnade. This was used for ritual bathing, and it is believed that the water in the tank has healing properties.
The Sun Temple at Modhera is a beautiful and historic temple, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
