I spent the day painting summer roses on antique paper — sheet music and bull’s eyes and old envelopes and pink receipts. I’ve been collecting antique paper for years, and some of these pages are 70 years old and some are 200 years old, and the thing they all have in common is that they looked really romantic to me today. 🖤

These paintings began as protest.

I painted women onto patriotic postcards because I couldn’t reconcile the promises they celebrated with the reality so many women—and so many LGBTQ+ people—are living.

I still believe art should ask difficult questions.
But today, on the Fourth of July, I’m thinking less about the America we’ve inherited than the one we’re still creating.
I think real patriotism is believing a country is worth asking more of. Worth improving.

These antique postcards have survived wars, elections, and generations of hands before reaching mine. I think they’ll outlive this moment, too.

Hope is something we make. So I’ll keep making art about women who are strong. I’ll keep preserving history while adding new stories to it. I’ll keep believing that art can imagine a future before politics catches up.

Happy Fourth of July. Here’s to an America that keeps becoming.

I drew on a piece of translucent paper, then spent the afternoon holding her up to everything in my studio.

Painted book pages. Antique sheet music. Old handwriting. Vintage wallpaper.

One drawing, dozens of possibilities.

One of my favorite parts of working with antique materials is seeing how a figure changes with the backdrop of history.

The first time I walked through the Louvre, I was overwhelmed by the crowds. Thousands of people winding through velvet ropes just to spend a few moments with a work of art.

I remember thinking, “One day, they’re going to put up velvet ropes for what I make...”

Years later, I told my partner about that moment. She took me seriously and bought the velvet rope. Now it hangs across the stairs leading up to my studio. Manifesting.

In my home, I hang my paintings alongside work by artists I admire. They’re in good company. More importantly, I make work I genuinely want to live with.

This piece is painted on an antique etiquette book for women called “Right and Wrong.” The original text made me cringe, which is probably why I wanted to paint over it.

HOUSE TOUR: I am an artist — and a collector. A maximalist. I never found a wall I couldn’t cover or a shelf I couldn’t layer.

My studio is on the third floor, at the top of our house. And I’ve seen every sunrise from that desk for five years.

My partner, , is the one with the green thumb. She has populated our house with so many happy plants! 🌱🪴

BE/COMING is now live.

I painted these pieces before my residency in Italy, but it wasn’t until I got there that I understood what the collection was really about.

For years, I’ve been chasing the next milestone. The next exhibition. The next opportunity. The next thing that might finally make me feel like I’ve arrived.

Then, for one week, something shifted. I stopped trying. I could simply be.

The title of this collection comes from that realization: the ongoing work of becoming who we are, and the relief of accepting ourselves as we are.

These paintings are some of the most personal I’ve made. They feature women who are tender, self-possessed, and unapologetically present, painted onto antique books, documents, engravings, and penmanship pages that carried their own histories long before they found their way to my studio.

I loved making this collection. I loved living with these women for a while. I loved finding the perfect antique paper for each of them.

And now I get to share them with you.
