My ideas about composition sometimes change mid painting. A lightbulb moment maybe or perhaps putting paint to canvas just shows the initial concept was not all it was cracked up to be. Fresh eyes are also an excellent driver of this creative evolution. Just talking through a painting with another person can spark fresh ideas and push the painting in a new direction. Thank you for your time this morning!

In this painting of Pepe I felt that the triangular shape of the cushion in the foreground was irritating to the eye but it took a wee while to figure out how to solve the problem… Enter ‘Lambchop’, Pepe’s treasured toy. There are still paws to resolve and a way to go but I think the painting is moving in the right direction.

A gorgeous morning for painting today! I walk here everyday with Woof and I have been itching to try and capture it with the leaves falling 🍂 fortunately a gentle breeze obliged!

Colour study for a larger portrait I’ll be beginning soon. I love the freedom that sketching like this and really focusing on colour rather than shapes allows. The emphasis was on the use of red in the accents and dark tones and limiting my use of black. Here I have principally used

The paintings I have been working on this week. I painted 5 days in a row for the first time in forever!! The weather was glorious and I wanted to make the most of it as we are due a fair bit of rain this week… Swipe to see each painting individually. 1. 30cm x 40cm. This was a great start to the week. I arrived to the spot early and the greens were almost lurid looking into the light. Going back on Thursday I arrived a bit later and the lateral light knocked the greens down a bit which I think will give a better overall effect and draws less focus. Not quite finished, another session I think…. 2.13x18cm 🔴SOLD. Working on this small size was really fun. I knew I only had an hour before I lost the light effect so tried to get as much paint down as possible. 3. 35cm x 50cm. I started this painting 2 years ago. The anemones were particularly beautiful this year. Still more to do on the pine tree and a bit of work on the foreground. 4. 24cm x 18cm. The light went rather flat towards the end. I’d like to get some more variation in the trees. 5. 30cm x 24cm. Only time to get a basic lay in. Once the weather improves I’m looking forward to getting back to it.
