Good things take time.

Sequoia trees, as used by Aron Demetz in his sculptures, can grow up to 3,000 years.
These trees may have lived through the rise and fall of empires and civilizations.
When Demetz takes these trees, either dead already or dying from disease, he does not just use the wood to shape into his narrative but allows the history of the plant to tell its own story.

Demetz’s practice is a dialogue between human intervention and natural forms.

While wood allows the tree’s history to speak, bronze captures its very essence in eternal form.
To create this sculpture Demetz performed a delicate casting process on a raw elder tree branch.
This direct relationship transforms an organic element into a timeless entity, crystallizing the delicate, natural texture of the wood within the metallic density of bronze.

“Art, Culture and Nature can be included in a single definition that interprets all of them. Aron Demetz’s works give us all of this.” - Claudio Libero Pisano

In Demetz’s work, it is clear how it all reflects each other; nature inspires art which inspires culture, and all the other ways around. He begins with the nature of the wood and enriches it through his expertise, leaving a work of art.

Don’t miss the chance to marvel at the detail of Aron Demetz’s work up close in his newest series, Racconti Brevi (Short Stories).

Crafted primarily from sequoia wood, these works evoke a relationship with time, a visual cycle of life, exposed through the natural qualities of the wood.

Together, this series creates a story of itself; similar to the raw, direct way that Raymond Carver, the inspiration behind the title of this exhibition, wrote his short stories.

Aron Demetz’s newest series, Racconti Brevi (Short Stories), has no human figures, setting it apart from his past works. Throughout this exhibition, he explores abstract concepts while keeping the natural structure of the wood intact.

Despite the visual divergence from Demetz’s previous sculptures, his mastery of and connection to the medium, as well as his expertly developed style, make it so even his abstract works exude distinct feeling and meaning, seeming enlivened.

Differing from his past works depicting human forms, in this exhibition Aron Demetz has pivoted to more abstract sculptures in this exhibition.
His expert craftsmanship and reverence for the material highlight the wood itself.
While he includes other materials in many of the works, like bronze and acrylics, the driving force of each piece remains in the sequoia wood.

Come see the intricacy of Demetz’s work in person!

Brevity does not always denote simplicity.

This is definitively shown in Aron Demetz’s Racconti Brevi (Short Stories), where sculptures, large and small, each tell a tale through sophisticated workmanship.
Together, the collection proposes a relationship with time through its medium.
The wood isn’t just a material; it is the message itself showing the circularity of life through its rings.

As trees age, they develop internal rings that reflect each year that has passed.
Throughout this exhibition, Aron Demetz utilized sequoia wood, a fast-growing tree from North America currently under attack from the disease of Xylella.
The death of these trees after over a century imbues Demetz’s work with a visual life cycle, with the trees’ entire life on display through these rings.

“there isn’t enough of anything
as long as we live. But at intervals
a sweetness appears and, given a chance
prevails.”
― Raymond Carver, Ultramarine: Poems

Aron Demetz drew inspiration for the title of this exhibition from writer and poet Raymond Carver, who only wrote short stories.
These works are filled with ordinary moments and ordinary people, made extraordinary by the rawness and authenticity of the writing.
Demetz creates the same feeling in each of his pieces, filing away the rest to reveal the truth.
