The Art of Life

The Art of Life What is The Art of Life? The Art of Life provides a look at what it means to be alive for people in different parts of the world. What's Next?

From a monk in Myanmar, to a coconut tree climber in India, walk a mile in someone else's shoes and see what it means to be alive in different parts of the world. The series has been shot on a GoPro from a first-person point of view, giving viewers an intimate window into the lives of others. Why was The Art of Life created? It's important that we do our best to acknowledge and share the feelings

of others. Seeing ourselves in context to the rest of the world is necessary as we look to create a more inclusive and supportive global community. Although we have our differences, we also share many similarities worth celebrating. We're all just doing the best we can, provided the situation, resources, and limitations at hand. But ultimately, there's more than one way to live life. How was The Art of Life created? My name is Neel, and I created the series after traveling for nearly three years. I hope The Art of Life can offer an un biased, un-narrated look at life for people around the world. While this series is as much about sharing different perspectives as it is capturing my personal experiences, the participants of the series are the true creators. I'd also like to thank Julio Vasquez - a brilliant brother and collaborator - for building The Art of Life's website. The Art of Life is an ongoing series with hopes of collecting and mapping as many perspectives from around the world as possible. Imagine being able to peak into Alaska and then seconds later catch a glimpse of life in Myanmar, followed by life in Kenya or Chile. I can't do this alone, so I'll be looking to crowdsource more videos from people around the world. If you'd like to contribute a video, please send me a message on Facebook or via email: [email protected].

We recently featured an artist in Italy who creates amazing paintings using spray paint and stencils. Thanks for being a part of the series and sharing your craft with us, MD Momin. A link to the episode can be found in the comments.

A spray paint artist in Italy creates an amazing painting of the Colosseum in less than 20 minutes.

While walking the streets of Rome we met MD Momin, a native of Bangladesh who has now been living in Italy for nearly 10 years. He’s not an artist by trade, but taught himself a variety of street art in order to provide for his family. Borrow his eyes and see what he sees.

Garbage collectors around the world - we see you, we appreciate you and we thank you for your contribution. Here are some photos of H, a garbage collector in Vietnam who was recently featured in one of our episodes. Link to episode in the comments.

Borrow the eye of a garbage collector in Vietnam.

H walks more than 10 kilometers a day, doing her best to keep the streets clean for hundreds of people in her immediate community. People like H help our world function on so many levels, yet they rarely have the opportunity for their voices to be heard or praises to be sung. Often times, our lives get so busy that it can be hard to slow down and acknowledge the people who make our lives easier. When we’re stressed we forget to be kind, and when life gets the best of us we have a natural tendency of selfishly forgetting that everyone around us also has a story.

So whether it’s the person who picks up your trash or fills your coffee cup, drives you to your next destination or fixes your plumbing, remember that they are your equal. They too have a story, dreams, loved ones, pain and sadness, and like everyone else, they’re just trying to figure things out a day at a time.

Garbage collectors around the world - we see you, we appreciate you and we thank you for your contribution.

Some behind the scenes photos of a recent episode showing the making of khao lam - a Thai desert made of sticky rice and coconut cream, cooked in pieces of bamboo. A must try if you're traveling through Thailand!

26/03/2019

Khao lam (sticky rice in bamboo) is one of many unique deserts enjoyed across Thailand.

Although there are slight variations, khao lam is generally a combination of sticky rice, sugar, salt, sweet red beans and coconut cream. These ingredients are stuffed into hollow pieces of bamboo and then slowly cooked over hot coals. Like most of Thailand’s many dishes, khao lam has a great balance of flavors and can leave you very full if you’re not careful.

Watch as Nhoo, Somsak, and Phol prepare khao lam in Khanom, Thailand. Combined, they have more than 60 years of experience in the food and agricultural space. They make a great team, each taking on a different role throughout the preparation process.

Photos from a recent episode featuring Huyen My Nguyen in Vietnam. She makes 100% organic, handmade lipstick and other cosmetics with her partner Hoan Ta. A link to the episode will be in the comments for those who missed it.

Borrow the eyes of creator Huyen My Nguyen and see what she sees while making a batch of 100% organic, handmade lipstick.

Shooting this video with Huyen My was somewhat of a meditation session. We rarely spoke, other than through eye contact and smiles, and though I wasn’t making the lipstick with her, I felt as though we went on a journey together. As is the case with most of The Art of Life’s episodes, my eyes were opened yet again to the complexities that make up what appear to be the simplest of products. What’s more, after spending hours with Huyen My and watching the focus and energy she poured into the process, it became clear to me that she was creating so much more than just a product. It was a very cathartic experience.

Huyen My creates these lipsticks under Poulo Condor, a brand she founded with her partner, Hoan Ta, 3 years ago. Inspired by a vision for beauty and purity, they set out to create a 100% organic, all natural lipstick and cosmetic brand in Vietnam. Using a combination of minerals, oils and waxes sourced from around the world, a variety of colors can be created to help people find their color of choice - one that creates a sense of confidence, beauty and matches the energy with which they’ll be approaching the day ahead. Check out the comment section for a deeper story about Poulo Condor and how you can sign up for a private workshop to hand make your own lipstick.

For those who watched one of our recent episodes featuring a mechanic in Vietnam, here are some follow up photos.

Borrow the eyes of a mechanic in Vietnam and see what he sees.

Mechanics can be found all around the world, and while one might think there is a standard way to fix a motorbike, each mechanic has a slightly different approach to identifying a problem and then fixing it. Different access to resources like tools and parts often times requires a heightened sense of creativity when it comes to solving problems quickly. Where there’s a will, there’s truly a way.

Hai, his wife Hue, beautiful daughter Linh, and the rest of Hai’s team were kind enough to give us a glimpse into their lives. Watching them manage their shop all the while raising a 6 month old child was very inspiring to witness, and reflective of the many hard working people you’ll find throughout Vietnam. Thank you for sharing a part of your life with us. Cảm ơn rất nhiều
