Nova Roma

Nova Roma International cultural organization and commonwealth dedicated to the restoration of ancient Rome. It was founded as a spiritual nation by M.
(2)

Nova Roma is an international cultural organization that aims to establish the Roman nation reborn and assembled in a symbolic, spiritually sovereign republic with the purpose to revive the institutions, customs, culture and religion of the ancient Roman people, to reconstruct and model an ideal Roman state in form of an international res publica, a commonwealth of citizen community, and to become

the new Roman people of our age. Nova Roma is the oldest existing Roman restorationist-revivalist community. Cassius Iulianus and Fl. Vedius Germanicus in 1998, and it is celebrating its quarter century anniversary, the Sacred 25th Year this year. The activities of Nova Roma as an organization are focused on the following objectives:

- the study, practice and promotion of the Roman religion and the cultus deorum,
- the practice and promotion of Roman reenactment,
- the supporting of the worldwide reenactor communities,
- the promotion of Roman culture and knowledge in general,
- the supporting and practice of living Latin language and the promotion of Latin,
- academic work and all forms of study on Romanitas,
- supporting and providing an international network for other groups who share the same mission of promoting Roman history, culture, arts, language, literature, virtues and religion,
- reconstructing the civic life of the Roman republic and its institutions for a modern audience,
- building a living Roman community of friendship and brotherhood where members support and respect each other,
- serving as the international home of the Roman nation reborn. One of the long term goals of Nova Roma is to build a Roman city, a historical reconstruction, which can serve both as a Roman reenactment center and tourist attraction for full Roman immersion, and as a world capital of Nova Romans, with the possibility for those interested even to live there a fully Roman way of life (with reasonable and expectable modern concessions). An integral part of the activities of Nova Roma is the Cultus Deorum, the ancient faith of the people of Rome. Both the domestic rites (sacra privata) and the state rites (sacra publica) are vital to the Cultus Deorum, and both are represented in the practices of Nova Roma. Our long-term goal is the restoration of the ancient Collegia sacra and the honoring of the full cycle of Roman holidays throughout the year. For now, we must make do with a schedule that is practical and the training of individuals who wish to take up the sacred offices. Also important for Nova Roma is the New Romanitas, a general revival of all other aspects of Roman culture, from cookery to literature, philosophy, ancient Roman law and the arts. A core aspect of the Roman culture which Nova Roma endeavors to revive is what are known as the Roman virtues. These virtues are what gave a small city on the banks of the Tiber the moral and practical strength to govern much of the world, and are most sorely lacking in our society today. Another aspect of the Roman culture in Nova Roma is the promotion of the Latin language, the only language in which those virtues and that culture ever found their most authentic and universal expression. By promoting Roman culture, we are in effect promoting nothing less than the revitalization of Western society. By practicing Roman crafts and arts, we more fully understand our own Western roots. Nova Roma is more than a historical recreation society, although we are that. We are more than a Roman religious organization, although we are that, too. We are more than a classical studies group, but that falls within our purview as well. We are a symbolically and spiritually sovereign New Roman Nation; an attempt to re-create the best of classical Rome (with a few compromises to modern times), and we invite you to join us by applying for Nova Roman citizenship today.

LUDI FLORALES | Aedilician Opening at the Ancient Festival "Nike - The Game and the Victory" in our Provincia Thracia

Part of the series of Floralia celebrations at various Roman history festivals across the globe, our aedilis curulis, C. Aemilius Iohannes Serdicensis (Jean Baptiste) and quaestor A. Vitellius Celsus, who is also the legatus pro praetore of NR Thracia, accompanied by the decemvir stlitibus iudicandis K. Quirinius Dasius, proquaestor of NR Dacia, and the praefectus of NR Regio Moesia, M. Servilius Gemellus Marsius, offered the main aedilician opening sacrifice of the Ludi Florales of Nova Roma on 9 May, in Niopolis Ad Istrum (Nikyup, Bulgaria), at the Ancient Festival "Nike - The Game and the Victory", organized by A. Vitellius Celsus (Vladimir Popov).

The programs, besides the Flora-ritual, included gladiatorial games, battle, Roman dance and many other things.

LUDI FLORALES EVENTS OF NOVA ROMA IN OTHER PLACES:

The larger central celebration of Floralia was personally presided over by the consul of Nova Roma, M. Caecilius Metellus Tocaiensis in Aquincum, NR Pannonia (Budapest, Hungary).

The aedilis plebis Q. Cornelius Rufus also made an opening sacrifice at his home altar in NR Britannia.

The third Floralia event of Nova Roma was held in Azaum, NR Pannonia on 16 May, and now, today, the 4th Floralia celebration is held at the Emerita Ludica festival by censor C. Petronius and quaestor Q. Sulpicius in NR Hispania.

What a glorious series of Nova Roma events!

OPENING OF THE STATE MOURNING for L. Equitius Cincinnatus Augur's State Funeral

[[Message from the consul:]] It is with great sadness that I call the attention of all citizens and friends of Nova Roma that we observe today the first day of the state mourning for our L. Equitius Cincinnatus Augur.

ATTENTION: The 3 days of state mourning were declared Dies Nefasti Publici (NP), and, according to the Decretum Pontificum de Diebus III.A., no official state business, no judicial procedure, no comitia shall be held on these days.

During this state mourning period, the main page of the Nova Roma website shows nothing else but a tribute to L. Equitius Cincinnatus Augur, his mourning portrait, black flags and similar symbols of grief, and other main portal pages of the website contains a black flag and reference to the mourning for L. Equitius Cincinnatus Augur:

Please also visit the In Memoriam page dedicated to him. This will be continuously updated with condolences and other news about her funeral and omens:

On each day of the state mourning period, the consuls will take care that there be a daily public message on the official fora of Nova Roma calling the citizens' attention to the mourning and asking for prayers for L. Equitius Cincinnatus Augur .

The aediles (curule and plebeian) collegially as a body will hold public funerary games in honor and in memory of our L. Equitius Cincinnatus Augur. The memorial funerary games shall be called Ludi Equitii (Equitian Games), shall be held for not exceeding 5 days, and shall include virtual or real munera gladiatoria and a biography contest about the life and Roman activities of our departed leader.

I call you to pray for L. Equitius Cincinnatus Augur and to remember him today, and especially tomorrow (Saturday) when his Nova Roman funeral will be held, and during the days of the State Mourning. If you feel so, please share your memories and prayers with the public of Nova Roma.

His significant service will not be forgotten.

Tomorrow the funus censorium ritual will be held by pontifex Lentulus, by censor M. Cotta, quaestors and other magistrates, and proconsul C. Flavius. The Ludi Equitii will be held soon, after the Ludi Florales, and real life funerary gladiatorial games will be held tomorrow at Cincinnatus's live Nova Roman state funeral which I regretfully will not be able to attend.

I ask all citizens and friends of Nova Roma to honor the memory and and pray for L. Equitius Cincinnatus Augur and his family. May our good prayers be reciprocated by propitious blessings from the gods!

Requiescat in pace!

M. Caecilius Metellus Tocaiensis

Senatus consultum de funere censorio L. Equitii Cincinnati Auguris

I. It was with great sadness that the Nova Roman Senate learned of the death of a vir consulars et censorius L. Equitius Cincinnatus Augur, former senator and former pontifex, flamen Martialis and augur of Nova Roma, one of the founding citizens of Nova Roma, who joined our citizenry on the first day of Nova Roma. He was integral to the birth and founding years of Nova Roma, and very sadly we only learned about his passing after three years of silence, because he withdraw from all publicity from Nova Roma. The Republic is in grief, and the Senate is mourning the loss of its former consul and censor, a founding citizen. All members of the Senate extend their sincere condolences to the family and friends of L. Equitius Cincinnatus Augur, and to all citizens who lost their former head of state and augur. His ascension to our ancestors shall be followed by our prayers, and he shall remain a patron spirit of Nova Roma forever.

II. In order to honor the memory of the late illustrious former censor, consul, praetor, pontifex, augur and flamen Martialis L. Equitius Cincinnatus Augur, and to express gratitude for his contributions to Nova Roma, and to pay homage to his greatness and importance for Nova Roman history, the Senate is hereby awarding and declaring a funus censorium, censorial state funeral to the vir censorius et consularus L. Equitius Cincinnatus Augur, as it is appropriate. Further, the Senate also authorizes a donation of an unspecified amount of money aiding costs of his funeral in the name of the Nova Roman People, the Quirites. This unspecified donation shall count as if it were given from the Treasury of Nova Roma, but the funds shall be raised by the treasury quaestors, and handled and spent under the joint authority of the consuls and the treasury quaestors, helping the heirs to conduct the funeral ceremonies. Recognizing that the actual funeral arranged by the family has been already held in April, Q. Arrio (III) A. Tullia cos. (April, 2021), this funus censorium serves as our separate funerary tribute but also supports the actual funeral financially.

III. The funus censorium of L. Equitius Cincinnatus Augur shall take place in a form of a funerary ritual and sacrifice conducted by one or both of the consuls, based on their agreement. The volunteering consul has the usual authorization to request one of the pontifices to perform the ritual in his place.

IV. The funus censorium ritual shall take place on the date appointed by the volunteering consul, and published in a consular edict on the funus censorium of L. Equitius. Before issuing the edict, the consul shall obtain an approval for the chosen day from a pontifex and an augur because of the calendrical complications of Roman religion. If the consul chooses to perform the ritual through the person of a pontifex, he has to arrange the date with the officiating pontifex before publishing the edict.

V. The Senate, to further honor the memory of L. Equitius Cincinnatus Augur, hereby officially declares a state mourning for the funeral of L. Equitius Cincinnatus Augur, which shall take place beginning from the day which precedes the funus censorium ritual, and shall last three days.

VI. These three days are declared Dies Nefasti Publici (NP), and, according to the Decretum Pontificum de Diebus III.A., no official state business, no judicial procedure, no comitia shall be held, no edicts shall be issued on these days. This may coincide with festivals and ludi, in which case they shall proceed alongside the state mourning, in a more modest, reduced form, and L. Equitius Cincinnatus Augur’s transition to the Manes shall be remembered in central position within the sacrifices and prayers of the festival.

VII. During this state mourning period, the main page of the Nova Roma website shall show nothing else but a tribute to L. Equitius Cincinnatus Augur, his mourning portrait, black flags and similar symbols of grief, and other main portal pages of the website shall contain a black flag and reference to the mourning for L. Equitius.

VIII. On each day of the state mourning period, the consuls shall take care that there be a daily public message on the official fora of Nova Roma calling the citizens' attention to the mourning and asking for prayers for L. Equitius Cincinnatus Augur.

IX. The Senate also instructs all aediles (curule and plebeian) collegially as a body to hold public funerary games in honor and in memory of L. Equitius Cincinnatus Augur no later than within one month after the funus censorium. The memorial funerary games shall be called Ludi Equitii (Equitian Games) and shall include some form of munera gladiatoria and a biography contest about the life and Roman activities of L. Equitius. The rest of the programs, including the length of the games, is at the discretion of the curule and plebeian aediles, but they shall not exceed 5 days.
