By RADEK SZLAGA

Connects the worlds of the east and the west.
The word MALARSTWO (Painting in Polish) painted in the font of Metallica.
The KILL YOUR IDOLS series started with Szlaga’s curiosity about a fascinating event involving PsyOps, CIA, hard rock and heavy metal music and its significant impact on geopolitics and cultural evolution.

USA military utilized a compilation of hard rock and heavy metal tracks to coerce Panamanian dictator Manuel Noriega out of hiding. The series borrows its title from a slogan on a T-shirt worn by Guns N’ Roses frontman Axel Rose, a contributor to the playlist that led to Noriega’s surrender. This strategic musical torture, ultimately compelled the dictator, known for his affinity for opera, to capitulate to the American forces. Meanwhile, in late 1980s Poland, bands like Guns N’ Roses and AC/DC held immense significance for the youth amidst the nation’s transformation, marked notably by Metallica’s influential 1987 concert in Katowice………

Szlaga captures the absurdity and humor of this event in this series of works. Through a visual depiction spanning continents and individual experiences Szlaga intertwines these narratives within a ‘transatlantic’ framework, encapsulating the cultural and geopolitical dynamics of the era, from the Eastern Bloc’s collapse to the surge of Western mainstream culture, and America’s global influence.

The Artist House / La Casa degli Artisti
L’Arte “viva” di Sally Smart
Opening September 23 from 6pm on the occasion of the European Heritage Days 2023 (Sept. 23-24) at Museo Boncompagni Ludovisi
Smart's hybrid sculptures personify characters inspired from the everyday, art history and mythology including a faun, a harlequin, along with other personages imbued with aspects of the uncanny and the surreal, all assembled to occupy spaces in the museum dedicated to 19th- and 20th-century fashion and costume and to encounter the works of the collection. The contemporary artworks confront the museum's 17th-century Flemish tapestries and archaeological nods of the trompe l'oeil frescoes of the salon of Vedute which evokes the splendor of the ancient Horti Sallustiani and the vanished Villa Ludovisi.

The exhibition is curated by Matilde Amaturo, Valentina Filamingo, Eugenia Carabba Tettamanti and Paulina Bebecka.

The show, The Artists Family, dances with mythology, archetypes, psychology, art, theatre and the entangled relationships between the body, history and culture. Layered and entangled, these motifs come together in the multi-material sculptures and wall works.

The embroideries on view are reconfigured, fragmented, and abstracted parts of the costumes of the Ballets Russes which were originally designed by Picasso, de Chirico, Delaunay, Goncharova, Larionov, and Matisse among others.

Smart's restructured textiles adorn the sculptures in the exhibition. Their heads, made out of bronze, are archetypal and mythological personages.

The sculptures are a place of connecting and layering of materials and meanings. The costumes have their own significance, and here they shed their primary function and become an integral part of the sculpture’s subject, made in bronze.

Here we have Flora. The Roman Goddess of spring and flowers as well as fertility.
The first-century poet Ovid depicted her as having the power to make both nature and humans more fertile.

Sally Smart's restructured textiles adorn the sculptures in the exhibition. Their heads, made out of bronze, are archetypal and mythological personages. Mother, Artist, Harlequin, Flora, Goat, Pulcinella make their contemporary appearance in
The Artists Family.

Have a look at the detail of the bronze sculptures, how malleable the material seems to be; in some you can still see the artists finger prints from when she was molding the shape.
