🔎Do you know this sculpture?Since I was a child this statue scared me. The Romans call "Bocca della verità". The "Mouth of Truth", which now rests outside the doors of the Basilica di Santa Maria in Cosmedin.
Probably depicts the face of the sea titan god Oceanus and it's not known exactly what was its function: historians aren't quite certain what the original purpose of the disc was. It was possibly used as a drain cover. According to the legend the mouth bites the hand of who doesn't tell the truth.
It has been used as a whimsical lie detector in a number of movies and video games, most famously in the 1953 romance, Roman Holiday, in which the carving was a major plot device.

🔎Conosci quest'opera? La vista di questa scultura mi ha sempre spaventata, fin da piccola. I Romani la chiamano "Bocca della verità" e si trova all'entrata della Basilica di Santa Maria in Cosmedin. Il volto è stato interpretato nel tempo come raffigurazione di vari soggetti: Giove Ammone, il dio Oceano o un Fauno. Non si sa con certezza quale fossea sua funzione originaria, probabilmente era usato come tombino nell'antica Roma. Secondo la leggenda, inserendo la mano dentro la bocca della scultura, questa si divora la mano delle persone bugiarde.
Ritroviamo la scultura e la leggenda ad essa legata in numerosi film e video games, il film più famoso rimane senza dubbio Vacanze Romane.

In Italian It means nose 👃 but if you are living in Rome you will discover that nasone is .....a fountain!⛲No other city in the world has many public drinking fountains as Rome, where there are 2,000 !The "mayor’s water”, is what the Romans ironically call the water that comes out of their taps 😆They are not historical or elite fountains, but actually “democratic”, as you can find in each area of Rome: historic centre, residential districts and the outskirts. They are made of iron, are about 1 metre tall and mid way up the column they have a spout in continuous flow of drinking water. The spout has a small hole on top from which you can drink by closing the main hole with one hand. 📨would you like to discover more stories about Rome? I Nasoni non sono fontane d'élite, ma molto "democratiche": si trovano in tutti i quartieri dal centro alle periferie. Sono in ghisa, alte circa 1 metro e hanno la caratteristica cannella da cui fuoriesce a getto continuo l’acqua da bere. La cannella ha un buchino al centro da cui si beve bloccando con la mano il foro principale, da questa forma insolita deriva il soprannome.
