Before Alexander conquered an empire, Macedonia had already become one of the most powerful kingdoms of the ancient Greek world. 🇬🇷
Its kings traced their dynasty to Greek heroic ancestry, worshipped the gods of the Greek pantheon, used Greek culture and institutions, and ruled from places whose remains still stand in northern Greece today — Aigai and Pella.
Under Philip II, Macedonia became the dominant power in Greece. His son, Alexander the Great, then carried Greek language and culture across an empire stretching from Egypt to Asia, helping create what we now call the Hellenistic world.
The royal tombs of Aigai, Macedonian art, inscriptions, sanctuaries and the legacy of Philip and Alexander still tell that story on Greek soil.
Ancient Macedonia was not outside Greek history. It was one of the forces that changed Greek history — and then changed the ancient world. 🇬🇷
