Chalkboard and window lettering and design. I am Inese but you can call me ILU - which is combination of the initials of my name and surname.

I am Latvian, but I live in Rome for almost 10 years now. I have always been creative person with various creative projects going on at any given time (from knitting, sewing, decorating, cooking etc) but have never done it professionally. I have always been very good with languages, customer service, interpersonal skills so I have ended up working in the environments where my language and communic

ation skills were valued. My first big JUMP was 2014 when I moved to Rome and had to learn Italian pretty much from zero and find my place in this new reality. I have learned the language, started to work in the restaurant which was a great school of people reading, and also some creative outlet as I got to be in charge of whole gift basket design and packaging and decoration operation every December. In the early 2023 I felt ready for a new jump into unknown. I decided to give myself some time to learn new skills and to reinvent my professional life. At the moment I am learning digital art skills and design basics in order to offer diversified services in the future. If there is something I have learned about myself - I am extremely good and quick in learning new things, even in my 40s! While I am learning new things, there are some things that I am very good at today:

I CAN DO REALLY EYE CATCHING CHALKBOARD SIGNS AND SHOP WINDOWS TO MAKE A GREAT FIRST IMPRESSION, TO ATTRACT NEW CLIENTS, TO INFORM ABOUT NEW SERVICES OR OFFERS, TO MAKE THE STREET PRETTIER.

5 years in the restaurant have allowed me to do a chalkboard market research without even realizing it at first. I do understand what makes a chalkboard sign on menu not just esthetically pleasing but also functional. Good chalkboard should solve your problem instead of creating new questions or confusions! It is such an underrated tool for businesses, especially in big cities with no real low season for tourism. Streets get better looking one chalkboard at the time, shops get more new customers, I get to make beautiful and functional pieces! It’s win for everybody! Another Latvian picnic for the renewal of independence of Latvia. It's my third year of chalkboard signs to mark the moment and try something new every year.
Since this year I am looking after a 9 month old, I choose less challenging layouts in general so that chances of completing them are higher!
I have a very strong feeling that custom made signs are a great touch for any party and great time stamp for the photos!

Happy Easter!
This is a strange holiday for me living in Rome. In Latvia it is much more about awakening of the nature and arrival of the spring, whereas in Italy it is religious holiday.
So I still colour Easter eggs in natural dyes even if chocolate eggs are clearly more popular here!

I know that carnival season 2025 is over, however I have a small lettering project that hasn't been shared yet.
So I volunteered for my kid's carnival at elementary school and made cardboard signs for crafts stations run by other parents.
I think it came out pretty playful and cheerful. Added bonus - kids got to practice reading the dying art of script letters!
Material: recycled cardboard and acrylic markers + fun modern calligraphy

It's been a while since I last posted! I never wrote it publicly but I am on a maternity break, however I am thinking of starting to take on some projects if they are doable in this situation.
When I see a chalkboard with potential that is not used, I get all excited! I did an attention grabbing sign for a small but very well furnished shop in Testaccio market in Rome. There were a lot of items to include on one chalkboard, so I made each entry very distinct and different from others.
Would this colourful sign grab your attention?

Here is one of my wedding chalkboards to let the wedding guests know that they have arrived to the right church, and later same chalkboard waited then at the party location. This way there is no room for doubts - is this the right wedding?

Last week or so it has been a real spring feeling here in Rome.
I did some hand lettering in my sketchbook to put this colourful feeling on paper.
I used Pentel Brush Sign Pens, Tombow ABT brush pens and Sakura Pigma Micron pen for black outline of the letters.

Back story - since I live in Italy, I started to watch Sanremo music festival every February. It is a great anthropological study of the country and the moment we are in.
For those of you who are not familiar with this phenomenon - it is more ore less full working week! 5 nights starting from 9pm to roughly 2am!
So I was thinking - I might as well do some meditative hand lettering every now and then during these 5 nights!

I made this personalized pocket size sketchbook as a welcome gift for a little girl on her first visit to Rome. What do you think - can it be an invitation to do some sketching and drawing outside?
