For me, Matera (not in Puglia) is one of the most breathtaking cities I have ever experienced. It is the oldest city in Italy and third in the world. The old city set in the sassi is where inhabitants live in caves. For me staying in a cave was a bucket list box to be checked. I can’t express the magic that comes from this beautiful place…

One of the things I will be doing on my house in Puglia are “grotto” walls or walls imbedded in shells. I have never done this so I am starting to practice. And lucky me I have a project coming up with this technique so I am starting to teach myself. When I do it in the future, I will be using concrete, not hot glue. Very excited about trying this new technique… more to come! Always learning!

The first time I ever came to the town of Grottaglie in Puglia, I saw this little old man walking in a lab coat. Being me, I had to follow him and see where he was going. Of course he arrived at his studio in a castle because we are in Italy and that’s what happens. When my husband and I walked in, our jaws dropped, this man Domenico Pinto Domenico Pinto was creating the most incredible , unique ceramics I had ever seen. His interpretations of The Odyssey, Italian history and love stories. It was the first and last time that Riccardo (my Italian husband) leaned over and said “we have to get some of these” Never has he been the one to want to buy art, normally there involves a lot of trickery on my part. Over the years Domenico became part of our family and taught to our classes in Puglia. He always had this incredible smile and the pride he brought to his work, emanating from his glorious talks. His work has been received from The Vatican to Dolce and Gabbana to name a few.
His beautiful soul and spirit will be vastly missed in Puglia, especially by us. We are forever grateful for all he brought to our lives. Whenever I think of him I will always smile as he lived in pure joy and happiness and I was lucky enough to be touched by that..
