The second season of IDEAS ends now.
What was it all about?

MEET Digital Culture Center , the International Center for Digital Culture in Milan.
Lottozero / textile laboratories , a creative hub specializing in textile design and production.
South Working, a hub committed to the enhancement and revitalization of Southern Italy.
Northern Light Composites, an innovative startup focused on R&D of recyclable composites for building boats.
The Circle, a farm with a sustainable approach to production and development thanks to aquaponics.

They are five stories which show ideas, projects and eventually the life of people who believe in a more sustainable and better world.

We thank everyone involved in IDEAS Italy: thank you for your work, for your unique commitment, and for your representing the Italian excellence in the world.

🌀Some of the stories we've come across in this second season of Ideas are related to the blue economy.

But what does it mean exactly?

📊The blue economy is a way of doing business that focuses on sustainable growth, considering how our activities affect the environment; the ultimate goal is to have no CO2 emissions.

🔬This approach relies on new technologies and innovative scientific methods to recycle resources.

💪 These examples show that a new, more sustainable, and inclusive economy is possible!

🌱 We're moving towards a future where industrial production is increasingly influenced by sustainable choices that aim to minimize environmental impact.

We have seen this in agriculture, but this positive trend is permeating every field of production.

👠Even in the world of fashion there are inspiring stories of entrepreneurs who have made sustainability and innovation the cornerstone of their products.

👟🪵Dotzer0, a young startup based in Florence, is one such example. They specialize in crafting shoes entirely from recycled materials sourced from wood, paper, and coconut processing waste.

♻️These shoes are 100% recyclable. In fact, after use, they can be sent to a specialized center for material recovery.

🌸These sneakers are not only original but also entirely eco-friendly.

Is it possible to apply the concept of sustainability and zero-impact energy consumption to an entire city?

It seemingly is, according to architect Luca Curci. Especially when it comes to talk about Vertical City.

🏢 Vertical City is the ambitious urban project consisting of a sustainable, self-sufficient city building which is rooted on the seabed and reaches a height of 750 meters. It includes 18 floors hosting houses, offices and commercial spaces: a real hub for social interaction and community engagement.

🔋Every level in the structure is equipped with green spaces, and a system of photovoltaic panels enveloping the entire city building can supply the necessary amount of electricity, making the structure energy independent.
Could this be the future blueprint for all world cities?

🧐 Aquaponics: when was it born?

The idea of using same water both for fish farming and for field irrigation dates back several millennia. The Babylonians, the Aztecs, and the peoples of South Asia first experimented with early forms of aquaponics.

⛲The Babylonians, renowned for their hanging gardens, designed a water distribution system conveying water from the level of the Euphrates river to upper ones, then flowed back down to irrigate all the gardens below. Indeed modern aboveground practices in agriculture have common elements with this ancient technique.

🌾Chinese people employed a method called "framed rice paddy". Fields were flooded to create an optimal habitat for eels, carp, and snails while simultaneously cultivating rice.

However, the most innovative aquaponics system in ancient times can be credited to the Aztecs with their “Chinampas”, cultivated islands floating on the same water where fish were also raised.

🔬Today, thanks to more advanced technologies, aquaponics is undoubtedly the most sustainable, cutting-edge technique ever seen in agriculture.

🤔Do you know the largest vertical farm in Europe is located in Italy?
It is called , it is located in Verolanuova (Brescia) and was inaugurated on October 6th, 2023. This farm implements the innovative method of multi-level hydroponic cultivation.

🥬The vegetables produced are the so-called 'teen leaf,' a type of medium-sized salad with a thicker and crunchier leaf. Additionally, thanks to this production process, there is no need to wash the product before eating it, and it has a longer shelf life.

📈The production experience of Kilometro Verde is a big step towards introducing sustainable agriculture practices in Europe.

Vertical farms like The Circle represent a true revolution in the field of sustainable agriculture.

🌱These multi-story structures are filled up with various plant species, making use of verticalization to optimize space and produce high-density crops. This method greatly reduces the need for land, pesticides, and water.

🏢It's fascinating to observe this revolution applied to urban architecture. Vertical living emerges as a sustainable solution for cities’ increasing population.

🌳An exemplary instance of this vertical architecture is the Bosco Verticale in Milan, designed as a model of biodiversity.

These twin towers accommodate 900 trees and over 20.000 plants, concentrated within 3.000 square meters of urban space.
The vegetation not only helps create a good microclimate but also filters dust particles from the urban environment.
