*The second volume of CORRISPONDENZE: ARCHVE is out!*

ARCHIVES OF THE EARTH is a site-specific research performance which consists of the simultaneous act of on-site printmaking and text writing.
The zine part of CORRISPONDENZE: ARCHIVE is the result of a collective design and creation workshop conducted by the DEER DEAR artist duo for a group of students in Sweden and Iceland.

Made of waste and found materials this publication presents itself as an experimental notebook that explores the possibilities and significance of contemporary landscape archiving.

Upcoming!!
“ARCHIVES OF THE EARTH” by DEER DEAR artist duo and , is the second project to be released within the booklet “B” of Corrispondenze 2024.
The project is the outcome of participatory research conducted through guest lectures and workshops in collaboration with students of MFA Embedded Design, at HDK-Valand, in Gothenburg, Sweden, and MA Design & New Environments, at Iceland University of the Arts, in Reykjavik, Iceland.

«ARCHIVES OF THE EARTH is a site-specific research performance which consists of the simultaneous act of on-site printmaking and text writing. The project sets out to rethink the possibilities and intentions of contemporary landscape archiving. The first series of this project is focused on the volcanic systems of the Reykjanes peninsula in Iceland. By locating specific coordinates, which are permeable to be transformed, an embodied practice faces questions that seem to be at the core of any performing art: what is the present moment and how can a human vessel translate it?».

«I didn’t lose my shoes. I lost».
With these words Joanna Pianka begins her reflection on her contribution to the “Off Your Shoes” exhibition,  premiered in November 2023 in the philomena+ art space in Vienna.
Shoes serve as the thematic linchpin interconnecting the diverse perspectives of three artists exploring the Memorandum of Understanding, partnership between Tunisia and the European Union.
The symbolic act of removing one’s shoes, the prelude for visitors embarking on this exhibition, unfolds as a nuanced gesture. At the same time a sign of respect and a ritual evoking instances where individuals shed their shoes during migrations or before embarking on a journey of hope across the sea. Losing one’s shoes, when crossing the desert or climbing a mountain, involves the risk of losing everything, including the possibility of survival itself.

What remains of the Memorandum of Understanding, as well as the many migration pacts that have been applied over time, on the bodies and in the memory of people and places?

The idea of presenting the “Off Your Shoes” project within the first booklet of “Correspondences: Archive” was born during ’s collaboration with + in Vienna over the past few months. There she met the three artists who realized in November 2023 the homonymous exhibition project.
From this encounter was born the willingness to provide space, even on an editorial level, for a discussion that addresses, through the practice of collecting testimonies, stories, and images, the migration policies presented in the Memorandum of Understanding (Tunisia - EU) and their political, economic and social impacts.
In addition to presenting the photographic documentation of the artistic research that accompanied the exhibition, the booklet also includes an extract of the speeches given at the panel discussion (19.11.23, Flucc, Vienna) titled “MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING?! The Externalisation of EU-Migration Politics and Artistic Activism”.

With the end of the year just around the corner, we are working on the design of “Off Your Shoes”, the first of five booklets we are going to publish from the beginning of 2024 as part of our main editorial project, which we title “Archive”.
All the projects that will be part of this publication were selected from an open call and focusing on an exploration of the relationship between researching, collecting and archiving, and the ways in which we perceive and represent the spaces we inhabit.

"Archive" is a conceptual space that brings toghether four booklets dedicated to four art projects, developed through a collaborative process between curators and participants, along with a fifth volume that offers a collection of texts that analyze the theme from different perspectives.

Through personal research, collective projects and spatial investigations, each volume servs as a launching pad for both action and reflection on the urgent issues of our time.

The booklet A: “Off You Shoes,” will be published in January. It narrate the research process behind the exhibition "OFF YOUR SHOES", realized at in November, by the artists , and . Here shoes serve as the thematic linchpin interconnecting the diverse perspectives of three artists exploring the Memorandum of Understanding, partnership between Tunisia and the European Union.

"Off Your Shoes" by , and is the first project to be released within the booklet “A” of third issue of Correspondences magazine in January 2024.

The project is linked to the exhibition that opened last Thursday in Vienna at the art space , curated by Christine Bruckbauer & .

«In July 2023 Tunisia has signed a Memorandum of Understanding in which the EU has agreed, among other arrangements, to give Tunisia financial and technical support to deter Europe-bound migration. A measure that fits in with the EU’s current asylum and migration policy, where borders are being pushed forward. This creates catastrophic conditions for refugees, but also for people on the ground.
[…] The exhibition project OFF YOUR SHOES links the topics of migration and loss to the history of labour and protest in Tunisia and Austria – with shoes being a common theme».

Corrispondenze magazine will be composed by five booklet. Each booklet will be published two months apart starting in January 2024.
