At first glance, The Offing by Giorgio Di Noto reveals nothing unusual; the rupture occurs only when you learn who made these images.

Inside the showcase, the project explores the thin line between the intentional and the unintentional in contemporary image-making. How does our way of seeing change when photographs that feel so familiar, and so far from any danger, turn out to have been made by terrorists?

What looks neutral is not. What happens when we recognize an image before we recognize its source?

At first glance: desert landscapes, animals, evocative natural scenes. Images that speak the familiar language of photography, the kind you scroll past without a second thought.

But their origin changes everything. These images were taken from blogs, social networks, and temporary online archives run by communication agencies affiliated with ISIS terrorist cells.

There is a distance between ethics and aesthetics of images, between what the pictures represent for us and what they actually illustrate, between us and the device from which we see them. By placing a photographic sheet on the screen which shows the pictures, the film is impressed by the light and record the image, but represents his distance.

How does our perception react when we discover that these images, aesthetically pleasing and familiar, were created by ISIS terrorists?

The project comes with a limited-edition publication of 50 copies, presenting the 190 shots from the exhibition in adhesive-print format — translating the exhibition’s concept into editorial form and extending its serial logic onto paper. Layout design is by Lorenzo Mason Studio.

It includes the full text by Andrea Elia Zanini, which draws on Foucault, Rykwert, and Bauman to read the Ritsona camp as a device of control and suspension. The text frames Cappelletti’s work as topographic, methodical, and anti-spectacular — yet revealing of singularity, and opposed to the logic of concealment embedded in modern bureaucratic systems.

ISOBOX comprises 190 photographs, arranged in a grid that is not merely form but method: the systematic nature of the inquiry becomes visual structure.
Where an image is missing, the void is neither filled nor concealed, it is made visible, declared. It becomes a presence within its own absence, a necessary part of the narrative.
