Il Museo del Risorgimento è una promenade du citoyën: un percorso che mette in scena la nascita dell’Italia moderna attraverso le idee, le scelte e le passioni che hanno costruito la nostra cittadinanza.

Tra documenti, ritratti e testimonianze, lo sguardo di Byron, la trama dei carbonari e le vicende dei protagonisti del Risorgimento restituiscono l’energia civile che ha preparato l’Unità nazionale e definito i presupposti dello Stato repubblicano.

La Festa della Repubblica diventa così un invito a ritrovare, in queste storie, il senso profondo della partecipazione e della responsabilità condivisa.

Un cammino nella memoria che parla al presente e continua a interrogare il futuro del Paese.

The Risorgimento Museum is a promenade du citoyen: a journey that stages the birth of modern Italy through the ideas, choices and passions that shaped our citizenship.

Through documents, portraits and testimonies, the gaze of Byron, the network of the Carbonari and the stories of the protagonists of the Risorgimento restore the civic energy that prepared national unification and laid the foundations of the republican state.

Republic Day thus becomes an invitation to rediscover, within these stories, the deeper meaning of participation and shared responsibility.

A journey through memory that speaks to the present and continues to question the future of the country.

✨ Giugno ai Musei

Giugno porta ai Musei Byron e del Risorgimento un programma speciale, nato dalla collaborazione con Ravenna Festival: tre appuntamenti site‑specific, tutti in prima assoluta, che trasformano il palazzo in un luogo di creazione viva.

🎶 Dal 9 al 13 giugno, dalle 10 alle 18, gli spazi del Museo ospitano la residenza aperta di Giovanna Baviera: viola da gamba e voce, tra studio, ricerca e incontro con il pubblico.

🎶 La residenza culmina il 13 giugno alle 23 con Soloindue, un concerto notturno che intreccia le sonorità della viola da gamba con il canto attraverso l’esplorazione del processo creativo.

🎶 Dal 23 al 29 giugno, alle 23, la corte di Palazzo Guiccioli accoglie La bambina inglese di e con Elena Bucci e musiche di Paolo Baioni: un omaggio drammaturgico e musicale ad Allegra Byron, tra memoria, voce e poesia.

✨ June at the Museums

June brings to the Byron and Risorgimento Museums a special programme created in collaboration with the Ravenna Festival: three site-specific events, all world premieres, transforming the palace into a place of living creation.

🎶 From 9 to 13 June, from 10 am to 6 pm, the Museum spaces will host the open residency of Giovanna Baviera: viola da gamba and voice, between study, research and encounters with the public.

🎶 The residency culminates on 13 June at 11 pm with Soloindue, a nocturnal concert intertwining the sounds of the viola da gamba with voice through an exploration of the creative process.

🎶 From 23 to 29 June, at 11 pm, the courtyard of Palazzo Guiccioli will host La bambina inglese, written and performed by Elena Bucci with music by Paolo Baioni: a dramaturgical and musical tribute to Allegra Byron, between memory, voice and poetry.

26–30 maggio 1860 — Palermo insorge🔥

Fine maggio 1860. Palermo è una città sospesa: le strade bruciano di tensione, i borbonici presidiano i punti strategici, la popolazione attende un segnale.
Poi, all’improvviso, il segnale arriva.

Tra il 26 e il 30 maggio, la città insorge. Le barricate si alzano, i colpi risuonano nei vicoli, e i Mille avanzano casa per casa, strada per strada. È una battaglia urbana feroce, fatta di coraggio, improvvisazione, alleanze improvvise.

Quando Palermo cade, non è solo una vittoria militare: è la svolta.

La conquista della capitale siciliana consolida la spedizione e rende irreversibile il crollo del potere borbonico nell’isola. Da quel momento, l’impresa di Garibaldi non è più un azzardo: è un processo che nessuno può fermare.

26–30 May 1860 — Palermo rises up 🔥

Late May 1860. Palermo is a city suspended in tension: the streets burn with unrest, Bourbon troops guard the strategic points, and the population waits for a signal.

Then, suddenly, the signal comes.

Between 26 and 30 May, the city rises up. Barricades appear, gunfire echoes through the alleys, and the Thousand advance house by house, street by street. It is a fierce urban battle, shaped by courage, improvisation and unexpected alliances.

When Palermo falls, it is not only a military victory: it is a turning point.

The conquest of the Sicilian capital consolidates the Expedition and makes the collapse of Bourbon power on the island irreversible. From that moment on, Garibaldi’s enterprise is no longer a gamble: it is a process that no one can stop.

🔥 Il soldato albanese e lo sguardo di Byron

Tra le illustrazioni che accompagnano le opere di Byron, si può notare un soldato albanese, ritratto con l’orgoglio e la forza dei costumi tradizionali.

Non è un semplice dettaglio visivo. È una chiave di lettura.
Per Byron, questi incontri erano finestre aperte sulle identità dei popoli: colori, armi, tessuti, posture che raccontano appartenenze, storie, modi diversi di abitare il mondo.

L’immagine del soldato diventa così un piccolo atlante etnografico: un invito a comprendere le peculiarità culturali dei Balcani e lo sguardo curioso — mai superficiale — con cui Byron attraversava l’altrove.

Questi ci ricordano che ogni viaggio è un incontro con l’umanità nella sua forma più concreta.

🔥 The Albanian soldier and Byron’s gaze

Among the illustrations accompanying Byron’s works, one may notice an Albanian soldier, portrayed with the pride and strength of traditional dress.

It is not a simple visual detail. It is a key to interpretation.
For Byron, such encounters were windows onto the identities of different peoples: colours, weapons, fabrics and postures that revealed belonging, histories and distinct ways of inhabiting the world.

The image of the soldier thus becomes a small ethnographic atlas: an invitation to understand the cultural particularities of the Balkans and the curious — never superficial — gaze with which Byron moved through elsewhere.

It reminds us that every journey is ultimately an encounter with humanity in its most tangible form.

🎭 Travestirsi è un modo per attraversare i confini

Byron amava sorprendere: durante il suo viaggio nei Balcani si fece ritrarre in abiti tradizionali albanesi, ricchi di ricami e simboli identitari.
Non era un vezzo, era il suo modo di dichiarare appartenenza, curiosità, desiderio di diventare altro attraverso il viaggio.

🎭 Disguise is a way of crossing borders

Byron loved to surprise: during his journey through the Balkans, he had himself portrayed wearing traditional Albanian dress, rich in embroidery and symbols of identity.

It was not a whim, but his way of expressing belonging, curiosity, and the desire to become someone else through travel.

A poet who does not observe from afar — he steps into stories, he wears them.

Ada Lovelace: lo sguardo che viene da lontano 🔥

Prima di diventare la pioniera dell’informatica, Ada Lovelace è stata una bambina cresciuta nell’ombra luminosa di Byron: un padre che non conobbe, ma da cui ereditò la spinta verso l’immaginazione e l’altrove.

Educata alla matematica per “correggere” l’indole poetica paterna, Ada fece l’opposto: trasformò i numeri in visione, la logica in un modo nuovo di immaginare il mondo.

Da quella tensione tra razionalità e fantasia nacque il primo algoritmo della storia.
Forse tutto è iniziato lì: nello sguardo di una bambina che, come Byron, vedeva sempre più in là. Se siamo qui, è anche grazie a lei.

Ada Lovelace: a gaze from afar 🔥

Before becoming a pioneer of computing, Ada Lovelace was a child raised in the luminous shadow of Byron: a father she never knew, yet from whom she inherited a passion for the imaginative and the elsewhere.

Educated in mathematics with the aim of “correcting” her father’s poetic tendencies, Ada did the opposite: she transformed numbers into vision, logic into a new way of imagining the world.

From that tension between rationality and imagination there emerged the first algorithm in history.
Perhaps it all began there: in the gaze of a child who, like Byron, always looked beyond the limit. If we are where we are today, it is also thanks to her.

Un ospite speciale ai Musei Byron e del Risorgimento

Oggi in visita ai Musei Byron e del Risorgimento abbiamo accolto un ospite speciale: il Ministro alla Cultura Alessandro Giuli.

Un’occasione preziosa per evocare, attraverso la figura di Byron e la sua adesione agli ideali patriottici che alimentarono il progetto risorgimentale, quella “poesia della politica” in cui visione, responsabilità e azione si intrecciano con naturalezza e continuano a parlare al presente.

Un incontro che rinnova la nostra gratitudine per l’attenzione rivolta al patrimonio culturale che i Musei custodiscono.

Today the Byron and Risorgimento Museums welcomed a special guest: the Minister of Culture Alessandro Giuli.

A precious opportunity to evoke, through the figure of Byron and his embrace of the patriotic ideals that fuelled the Risorgimento, that "poetry of politics" in which vision, responsibility and action intertwine naturally and continue to speak to the present.

An encounter that renews our gratitude for the attention devoted to the cultural heritage these Museums preserve.

🤝 In questi giorni ai Musei Byron e del Risorgimento.

In questi giorni abbiamo accolto gli Amici di Chichester per celebrare i trent’anni di gemellaggio tra Ravenna e la città inglese.

La delegazione, ricevuta dalla direttrice Alberta Fabbri, ha potuto visitare i musei insieme a Donatino Domini e Claudia Giuliani, membri del Comitato Scientifico: un’occasione speciale per attraversare le collezioni guidati da chi ne ha curato l’impianto culturale.

Felici che il Museo Byron possa essere una casa per i tanti visitatori inglesi che proprio a Ravenna riscoprono legami, storie e radici condivise.

🤝 These days at the Byron and Risorgimento Museums…

These days we welcomed the Friends of Chichester to celebrate the thirtieth anniversary of the twinning between Ravenna and the English city.

The delegation, received by Director Alberta Fabbri, visited the Museums together with Donatino Domini and Claudia Giuliani, members of the Scientific Committee — a special opportunity to explore the collections guided by those who had shaped the cultural lay-out.

We are delighted that the Byron Museum can be a home for the many English visitors who, here in Ravenna, rediscover shared connections, stories and roots.

14 maggio 1860 — Salemi, il giorno della svolta 🔥

Immaginiamo Salemi, 14 maggio 1860. Le strade polverose, i Mille ancora segnati dal viaggio, Le strade polverose. Garibaldi arriva, scende da cavallo, e compie un gesto che pesa più di una battaglia: si proclama dittatore dell’isola “in nome di Vittorio Emanuele II”.

Da quel momento, l’impresa dei Mille cambia ritmo: non più una spedizione audace, ma un governo in movimento. Garibaldi istituisce la leva obbligatoria, riorganizza l’amministrazione, prepara la Sicilia alla liberazione.

È un passaggio rapido, un fotogramma, ma segna l’inizio di una nuova fase: l’eroe che diventa guida politica, e l’isola che diventa il primo laboratorio dell’Italia che sta nascendo. Nelle sale del Museo, questo momento emerge come una soglia: il punto esatto in cui la storia accelera.

14 May 1860 — Salemi, the turning point 🔥

Let us imagine Salemi on 14 May 1860. Dusty streets, the Thousand still marked by the journey. Garibaldi arrives, dismounts, and makes a gesture that is worth more than a battle: he proclaims himself dictator of the island “in the name of Victor Emmanuel II.”

From that moment, the Expedition of the Thousand changes pace: no longer just a daring campaign, but a government in motion. Garibaldi introduces conscription, reorganises the administration, and prepares Sicily for liberation.

It is a fleeting moment, almost a single frame — yet it marks the beginning of a new phase: the hero becomes a political leader, and the island turns into the first laboratory of the Italy that is about to be born. Within the Museum’s galleries, this moment emerges as a threshold: the precise point at which history accelerates.

11 maggio — La cavalla che apre la storia 🔥

Garibaldi entra a Palermo in sella a Marsala, la cavalla ricevuta in dono subito dopo lo sbarco in Sicilia e che lo seguirà fino a Caprera. Un dettaglio? Un dettaglio, certo, ma uno di quelli che illuminano un’intera epopea.
Il dipinto di Achille Martelli, garibaldino e pittore, appartiene al filone garibaldino: non la grande battaglia, ma la scena che svela l’uomo dietro l’eroe. Nelle sale del

Museo, Marsala diventa questo: la voce fuori campo che ci ricorda come anche la storia più grande si riveli attraverso un dettaglio.

Garibaldi enters Palermo riding Marsala, the mare he received as a gift shortly after landing in Sicily, and who would remain with him until Caprera. A detail? Yes — but one of those details that illuminate an entire epic.

The painting by Achille Martelli, Garibaldian and painter, belongs to the Garibaldi tradition: not depicting the great battle, but the scene that reveals the man behind the hero. Within the Museum’s galleries, Marsala becomes precisely this — a quiet, offstage voice reminding us that even the greatest history unfolds through a detail.
