About Mary (2019) began with the discovery of an old suitcase, found while clearing a family attic.
Inside, a dress, scattered objects, and a handwritten diary.
The diary belonged to my great-grandmother, Mary Fagan, written at the time she was preparing to leave Ireland for Glasgow, where she would later live in the Gorbals.
Through her words—fragments of dreams, fears, and expectations—a personal story of migration emerges. But the work moves beyond biography.
About Mary reflects on the loss and transformation of identity, on the fear of the unknown, and on the fragile traces that remain over time.
Memory here is not stable: it fades, shifts, and survives only in fragments.

About Mary: A Family Migration Story

In 1901, my great-grandmother Mary Fagan Murray crossed the water from Ireland to Scotland with her husband, hoping to build a better life for their family in Glasgow. She was leaving behind poverty, unemployment, and religious persecution, but also entering something darker: the murky water of uncertainty, where hope and fear move together.

About Mary: A Family Migration Story

When Mary Fagan Murray, my great-grandmother, left Ireland in 1901 with her husband in search of a better future in Scotland, she did not leave behind only a homeland, but also a part of her identity.
This image is part of About Mary, a photographic project inspired by her migratory story and by the dreams she recorded in her diary. Here, water becomes a space of passage and memory.
Migration has always carried a double meaning, the hope of a new life, and the grief of losing one’s roots, language, and sense of belonging.

“Why are the faces never shown?” This question touches on an important aspect of my artistic research. In my work, the hidden face becomes a reflection on vision itself: on what is seen and unseen, on presence and absence. By not fully defining the subject, I want to leave space for the viewer to construct their own vision, project a part of themselves, and experience the work in a personal way. In this sense, the absence of the face is not a lack, but a possibility.

In Your Shoes
(The Dianara)
2023, 70 × 105 cm

A detail from The Dianara series.
In many European folk traditions, inversion holds a protective power: wearing clothes inside out, reversing left and right, or walking backwards were gestures believed to disrupt curses and confuse malevolent forces.
Here, the shoes are swapped — right for left.
A small disturbance in the order of the body.
A way to unsettle what might be watching.

Beyond the Normal Period (Panel II)
2024
13 × 18 cm

La Dianara is a photographic project rooted in Southern Italian folklore.

It looks at the shadow side of femininity — not as spectacle, but as a quiet disturbance within everyday life.

In this work, ordinary female portraits are crossed by aggressive natural elements.
Fire, matter, and tension interrupt the image, transforming the familiar into something unstable.
What appears normal is never neutral.
Something is always burning beneath the surface.

2024, 30 x 45 cm

La Dianara is a photographic project rooted in Southern Italian folklore.
It looks at the shadow side of femininity - the monstrous, the dark, hidden inside everyday life.
