**Radio noMade in Arberia @ TMO **

For Copresence, a Manifesta 12 collateral project , during the closing of the biennial, in addition to the performance of sensorial theater proposed in its entirety at TMO the evenings of November 2, 3 and 4th, the noMade collective invites artists, poets, writers, anthropologists and historians who have developed a work around the Arbёreshe culture to meet and share with the public.

The basic idea is the "Sheshi", in Albanian, the square, the public space that was lived in every hour of the day by the inhabitants of the communities that gathered there to exchange practices, words, thoughts, musical notes, joys and sorrows.

"Piazza Arberia" will host different musical and poetic incursions during the 3 days of performance to nourish visitors who are curious about the Arbёreshe culture and thus open spaces for discussion and dialogue also around the theme of migration and integration.
It will also be possible to view the film "Radio noMade in Arberia" and other documentary films on Arbёreshe culture.

Artists and / or collectives working around tradition and popular culture are also invited to participate, in order to reinforce existing bridges with contemporary art.
The theatrical performance "Radio noMade in Arberia" will be played on Friday and Saturday from 18:30 to 23:00 and Sunday from 16:30 to 21:00.

The event is free to participate with a recommended offer of 10 euros.

COPRESENCE kick-off last week was very inspiring; rescue workers, migrants, artists, professors, students and other people involved gathered to talk about their experiences with migration. After all, Palermo is an excellent location for this topic to be researched and to exchange knowledge about, since mayor Leolucca Orlando has a unique view on how to handle migration flows.

The film screenings, talks and sensorial sound installation were used as tools to make the migration topic more accessible and to address it from different perspectives. A report about the outcome of COPRESENCE PART 1: Opening Weekend will be written and published soon, so keep following us and see how art can develop new knowledge.

Thanks to everyone who visited COPRESENCE! For the ones who could not make it: we will continue our film screenings during Manifesta Biennial Palermo at meeting place and restaurant Moltivolti. And we will be back with a new program for the closing event in November! Stay tuned!

Support NoMade - open for shifting ideas!

The collective has so many great ideas to translate their investigation of Arbëreshë culture (Albanians in Italy) to artworks, such as a multimediainstallation that offers visitors a poetic experience or a series of performances. Help them with the final step to make it happen!

Learning a new language might be the biggest challenge of moving to another cultural environment. Especially emotions are hard to convey because of language barriers. How can migrants express themselves while they do not master the language yet?

Artist Gluklya Pershina has come up with a playful method, entitled The Language of Fragility, that is aimed to find new visual forms of expression to give migrants a voice and visibility in the public domain.

Do you also foster new approaches of language? Join us on June 16 @ TMO - Teatro Mediterraneo Occupato!

For our Dutch followers: an article that explains why Palermo is the right place to establish an interdisciplinary dialogue on migration.

Palermo is an excellent location to bring together people who are willing to welcome migrants and accept their presence in society. Most policy makers fear migration flows and the presumed negative impact these could have on their direct environment. The mayor of Palermo, however, accepts the challenge of migration and is committed to achieve a free entrance for migrants into the European Union.

COPRESENCE supports this progressiveness and will do so by sharing new methods to understand the problems of migration through art.

The film Radio noMade in Arberia by NoMade - open for shifting ideas represents an investigation of Arbëreshë culture (Albanians in Italy). The Arbëreshë are an Albanian ethnic and linguistic group who entitled their scattered nation in Southern Italy 'Arberia'. The film intends to give shape to this 'Geography from the Elsewhere', a term that implies a non-territorial concept; the Arbëreshë are geographically spread, but united by language, culture and emotions.

While the film summarizes the investigation by combining private archives and newly shot footage, a multimedia installation will offer a more poetic experience. It will be a one-to-one sensorial and meandering journey inside the memory.

COPRESENCE

COPRESENCE, a program selected for Manifesta 12 Collateral Events in Palermo Hosted by Teatro Mediterraneo Occupato, June 14 through November 4, 2018. COPRESENCE, a collaborative program by TAAK and noMade Collective, presents two different artprojects and a public talk around global migration: one of the most challenging social issues that Europe is facing and that divides citizens of European countries. The debate on migration is mainly dominated by abstract demographic figures, bureaucratic integration systems and the fear for presumed negative impact. COPRESENCE proposes a different approach to the phenomenon of migration by sharing new methods to understand the complexity of cultural transition through art. The distinctive value of art lies in its ability to visualize emotions related to complex situations. This helps people to put themselves in the position of others and achieve understanding towards migrants. The program builds a dialogue between two artistic and performative works that are the outcome of two different projects; these can function as casestudies to enhance an interdisciplinary discussion with local cultural, scientific and political stakeholders working on migration and interculture. Deriving from the arts, COPRESENCE aims to create a space where experiences and reflections can be shared to create new knowledge and ways of thinking on the topic. In addition to these presentations and discussion round(s), an interactive workshop entitled The Language of Fragility will take place. This workshop offers visitors through language and drawings the experience of incommunicability that migrants are often found in.

PROJECTS TO BE PRESENTED

  • TAAK presents the project Carnival of the Oppressed Feelings, initiated by artist Gluklya and developed by TAAK. This performative demonstration filled the streets of Amsterdam in the fall of 2017. The artist wanted to make a statement to welcome refugees, but also give them a face and a voice in the public domain. The demonstration was the outcome of a two-year research focusing on new visual forms of expression for emotions of today’s migrants through the ritualization of carnival; a setting in which all demons can find their expression. The costumes, especially made for the carnival, expressed the fears and frustrations that the newcomers experienced in another country while the carnival itself served as an outlet for oppressed emotions. On June 15, the film made about this event will be shown.

  • NoMade Collective presents their research project Radio noMade in Arberia by showing a film and multimedia installation. The film Radio noMade in Arberia represents an investigation of Arbëreshë culture (Albanians in Italy). While the film summarizes the investigation by combining private archives and newly shot footage, the multimedia installation will offer a more poetic experience. It will be a one-to-one sensorial and meandering journey inside the memory. On June 15, the film will be shown and the multimedia installation will be opened. You can find more information about the program at the event page. COPRESENCE is hosted by Manifesta 12 Collateral Events and generously supported by STEP Travel Grants.
