On Sunday June 27 we had a pleasure to open our conceptual exhibition ILOI. It was a truly wonderful and emotional day for all of us. Despite the heat and tiredness, up to 120 people joined the ILOI vernissage celebration.

«Palermo culture is not about the city and its historical sites, Palermo culture is about the people who inhabit it» emphasised our special guest Mario Zito (assessore alla culture di Palermo) during the event opening. These words strongly reflect the whole concept behind ILOI which brings human relationship in the centre of everything.

«You made this place alive again with your dances, music and a beautiful athmosphere» shared with us one of the Spasimo employees.

On Sunday June 4 we are closing the exhibition in Palermo, but it is not the end of the journey. As organisers and artists, we would like ILOI to grow into a movement of nomadic, collaborative and reflexive exhibition making. Travelling across physical and virtual spaces, ILOI will open the discussion about representations and engage in the dialogue between academics, artists, and the audience in both virtual and physical ways.

ILOI is the result of a twine between Nigeria and Sicily. La ex chiesa di Santa Maria dello Spasimo, che accoglierà ILOI dal 27 Giugno al 4 Luglio 2021, è uno dei luoghi più affascinati della Kalsa. Costruita in epoca aragonese, prende il suo nome dallo “Spasimo di Sicilia” di Raffaello. Anche lei è caratterizzata da una storia di contraddizioni e sovrapposizioni: da chiesa a primo teatro pubblico di Palermo, da lazzaretto durante la peste del 1624 a ospedale di fine Ottocento, la chiesa è resa di nuovo agibile nel 1995. Dal 1997 lo Spasimo ospita il Museo del Jazz, la Scuola Popolare di Musica e la Scuola Europea d’Orchestra del Jazz.

The ex church of Santa Maria dello Spasimo, which will host ILOI from the 27th of June to the 4th of July 2021, is one of Kalsa’s most fascinating places. Built during the times of aragonese governance, she takes her name from Raffaello’s “Spasimo di Sicilia”. She is likewise characterised by a history of contradictions and overlaps: from church to first public theatre in Palermo, from lazaret during the 1624 pandemic to fin de siècle hospital, the church is again accessible in 1995. Since 1997 it hosts the Museum of Jazz, the Scuola Popolare di Musica and the European Jazz Orchestra School.

Nella lingua di Edo, stato della Nigeria del sud, ILOI vuol dire regina.
All’interno della mostra, le donne nigeriane che popolano Palermo si fanno reggenti della loro stessa rappresentazione e invitano lo spettatore a imbarcarsi in un viaggio multimediale. Attraversando gli stereotipi a cui sono soggette, per approdare sulle familiari isole delle loro identità in quanto donne, madri, figlie, sorelle e regine.

In the language of Edo, southern Nigerian state, ILOI means queen.
In the exhibition, the Nigerian women inhabiting Palermo make themselves the rulers of their own representation and invite visitors to embark on a multimedia journey. Bypassing the stereotypes to which they are subjected, they land on the familiar islands of their identities as women, mothers, daughters, sisters and queens.
