A note to all our followers that Glasstress at Ca’ Tron will be closed to the public tomorrow Wednesday 2nd and Thursday 3rd September, and on the morning of Friday 4th September, for a private event. The exhibition will reopen on Friday afternoon and resume its normal opening hours.

We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause and hope you will take the opportunity to visit Glasstress in Murano at the Fondazione Berengo Art Space from Thursday the 3rd of September, or the exhibitions currently running at Palazzo Franchetti.

Happy Birthday to Ai Weiwei! Artist, activist, and fearless creative force. At Berengo Studio, we are proud to have collaborated with Ai Weiwei on some of his most powerful explorations in glass. From the haunting beauty of “La Commedia Umana”, a 9 metre high hanging glass sculpture of 4000kg of Murano glass confronting themes of life, death, and humanity, to the poetic fragility of his glass handcuffs and surveillance cameras, Ai continues to push the material to new conceptual limits.

His work reminds us that even the most delicate medium can carry the heaviest truths. Today we celebrate not only his birthday, but his unwavering voice and enduring impact on the world of art.

Buon compleanno, – and thank you for turning glass into a language of resistance.

You can currently see La Commedia Umana on display in England, Manchester, at Factory International as part of the artist’s exhibition ‘Button Up!’ which runs till the 6th of September 2026. Here you can see the team putting together the very first prototype for the piece, and if you stick around till the end of the video you can see the artist’s reaction when he finally got to see it in person.

A very happy birthday to Koen Vanmechelen from everyone at Berengo Studio! We’ve had the pleasure of working with this Belgian artist for several decades now, both as an artist and a curator. Vanmechelen has been with Berengo since the start, working both behind the scenes and featuring centre stage.

Today you can view his art in Venice at his solo show “We Thought We Were Alone” which is currently running in Venice at the Palazzo Rota Ivancich and as part of our exhibition “Glasstress” at Ca’ Tron.

In both locations a large scale sculpture by the artist reimagines the concept of the Venetian chandelier with Vanmechelen’s signature visual language. “The chandelier seduces at first, light and fragile, almost ornamental,” Vanmechelen observes, “Look closer and snakes move through its form, not just as temptation, but as a beginning, the moment we leave paradise and start shaping a new reality.”

It is with great sadness that Berengo Studio mourns the loss of Italian artist Fabrizio Plessi. A pioneer of video art, Berengo Studio collaborated with Plessi back in 1998 to create his artwork “Nove Canali Fragili” (Nine Fragile Channels), a collaboration that involved a video installation with 9 TV screens and Murano glass.

In an interview back in 2023 the artist noted that living in Venice he “acquired from life a fluidity in thought and passion,” a sentiment that we feel also translates to the concept of working with glass.

“Glass is such a refined material, fragile and strong at the same time. I have never witnessed a medium that could be so alive.” – eL Seed

A very happy birthday to eL Seed! This Friday we’re remembering when the talented artist came to Murano in person to work with the maestros in the furnace. “Glass makes you rethink, deconstruct your work to skip the constraint the medium imposes on you,” he observed about the process. “The boss in the furnace is the glass. I learned that from Maestro Nicola who explained to me that the medium tells you when you need to stop. I found that so poetic.”

“Materials are not a language; they are a MEANS. Different media allow different forms of expression which is why I have used so many.” - Judy Chicago

This year sculptures in glass by the pioneering American artist Judy Chicago can be found in exhibitions across the Venetian lagoon, in both Venice and Murano. The powerful curves of a female body are brought to life in clouded cast glass in her most recent collaboration with Berengo Studio titled “Glass Goddess.”

In an interview for My Art Guides Chicago noted how the last twenty years have brought about more experimentation with glass as a material, and we’re honoured to be her collaborator in this regard. “I have been working in various glass techniques as they allow an exploration of fragility, vulnerability and transparency combined with strength,” she observes, “which seem appropriate to the subjects I have been dealing with; mortality, environmental collapse, extinction and the power of the human spirit.” One thing we admire about Chicago is her ability to switch seamlessly between mediums. “Each media has potential and it also has limits,” she notes, “Pushing those limits is something that characterizes my practice.” We couldn’t agree more.

In Venice Chicago’s work in glass is on display in the group exhibition “Glasstress” in Murano at the Fondazione Berengo Art Space, and in her solo show “The Materiality of Judy Chicago” an exhibition curated by Allison Raddock that runs at the Galerie Alberta Pane until the 22 November 2026.

“Sometimes we don’t know what we carry with us until someone invites us to look within.” - Fariba Ferdosi

As people jet off for their summer holidays we’re taking a moment to contemplate a translucent glass suitcase that features as part of this year’s Glasstress exhibition in Venice: a familiar object reimagined using the medium of glass.

Originally exhibited at Milan Malpensa International Airport the artwork “X-Ray-Me” by Italian-Iranian artist Fariba Ferdosi asks us to pause and contemplate the things we carry with us that no airport scanner could ever reveal.

It’s the final week to experience Qi Zhuo’s solo exhibition, “There Is a Crack in Everything, That’s How the Light Gets In” at HdM Gallery, Beijing!

Beyond Beijing, Qi’s latest collaboration with Berengo Studio is on view as part of Glasstress in both Venice and Shanghai!

In the artwork “Bubble Game – Budaoweng” handcrafted glass and ceramic come together in a body that sways but never falls. Inspired by the traditional roly-poly toy, the work embraces perpetual oscillation, where fragility becomes structure, repair becomes movement, and balance is never fixed but continually negotiated.

Delicate yet resilient, it offers a meditation on the quiet strength required to remain upright in an unstable world.
