Varnish day!
Giving some of my latest plein air paintings and a portrait study their final finishing touch. There’s something so satisfying about that moment when the colours come back to life under a fresh coat of varnish.

I painted at Talbot Lake en plein air many years ago, and I’ve been wanting to return to this beautiful spot ever since.
The journey there came with a heavy downpour, but we were lucky to get a tiny 30-minute window of sunshine between the storms.
It was definitely one of my speediest paintings! 😅 The light was changing by the minute, but I’m so happy I got the chance to capture this beautiful moment.

Sometimes plein air painting is all about embracing the moment before it disappears.

Sometimes I just want to paint without a plan—to create something that isn’t part of a series, doesn’t have a purpose, and doesn’t need to “become” anything. Just pure play.
And funny enough, this is often where the best ideas begin. A new colour palette, an unexpected combination, a different way of working… little discoveries that eventually find their way into my more intentional paintings.
So yes, sometimes I paint just to play. And I think that’s a very important part of being an artist.

I’m so excited to be in top 8 to compete in the Canada Paints Plein Air competition on August 8 th in Calgary.
Painting en plein air always comes with its own challenges—changing light, unpredictable weather, and making quick decisions. Add the excitement of painting in an unfamiliar location and the energy of a competition, and it becomes an even greater adventure.
I can’t wait to embrace the challenge, learn from fellow artists, and enjoy every moment. Wish me luck!
