“What kind of times are these, when a conversation about trees is almost a crime…”, wrote Bertolt Brecht in 1939 whie in exile, in his poem To Posterity.

Almost a century later, the world once again faces profound crises. Yet speaking about trees can no longer be dismissed as a retreat from urgent realities. The lack of attention paid to must increasingly be seen as exemplary of the general neglect of the more-than-human.

For many years, Uriel Orlow has explored plants as witnesses, teachers and political actors. Throughout his practice plants become a prism through which to reconsider our relationship with history, thinking through the present and imagining possible futures. In Orlow’s work plants and our interaction with them not only reveal blind spots of history but also expose the violence at the heart of Western systems of knowledge, extraction and colonialism.

The exhibition opens with the performance Reverie of Collective Walkers (Reading to Plants), in which the artist and participants will read poetic and literary texts to the plants in San Giuseppe ‘U Timpuni’ Park in Modica. By reversing the conventional hierarchy between speaker and listener, the performance invites the plants to become interlocutors with whom to build individual, intimate relationships.

Together, the works in What kind of times are these, when a conversation about trees is almost a crime make an urgent plea to move beyond human exceptionalism and open new perspectives to rethink our place in a shared world through principles of coexistence, reciprocity, care, conviviality and radical proximity.

Walter Benjamin Is Dead Timeline is a site-specific wall drawing. This timeline is part of a drawing series started in the year 2022 that have been using different materials such as blackboard, pastel, chalk, and now wallpaper, pencil, and watercolor.

The events mentioned in these timeline series have been gathered through a series of workshops and study groups since 2022, focusing on the notion of history through a Walter Benjamin lens, where the participants constructed the timelines marking the events they considered more decisive in their lives or in the life of their communities. New suggestions for the timelines keep being expressed in new workshops and new meetings, and as such all the timelines evolve, to be fixed only at the moment they become a wall drawing.

MAY 8: VENICE ON STRIKE

As a cultural workers we are in solidarity with the cultural workers who have called the MAY 8 STRIKE to collectively say no to the genocide pavilion at the 61st Venice Biennale. Today marks the first Biennale strike called since 1968, and at a larger scale than then. The artists and workers united for the liberation of Palestine!

The research of Jonas Staal deals with the themes of democracy and the law.
With a keen interest in issues of social justice and the right to self-determination of individuals and peoples, in 2012 the artist founded the New World Summit, an artistic and political organisation that develops alternative parliaments for stateless political movements.

The event will provide an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of Jonas Staal’s work and to view a selection of his pieces.

The event will be hosted by Gabi Scardi and will be held in English.
