First Friday Art Opening at the I. Fell Spurs Follow Up Event on 1/21
Bloomington, Indiana- First Friday at the I.Fell gallery on January 6th featured resident artists and their friends in the aptly titled “Fell + 1” art exhibit. Fell is home to over 13 working artist studios featuring painting, textile design,
jewelry making, leather work and photography. Fell Artist Amy Burrell created two interactive, improvisational installations for the show. The first, “Pendurador,” greets visitors when they walk into the gallery. A series of 17 hangers suspended by pulleys and rope invite people to try and hang their coats using the devices before fastening each rope to the wall. The result is a ever changing, kinetic sculpture of function and form. Burrell collaborated with J. Jones and other artist friends to create the AsGoodAsMIne_Collective and design the project " ." Initially inspired by elaborate flower headdress of eastern Europe, Burrell sought out artificial flowers and found an excess at a local thrift store. She and members of the collective began creating headdresses as a practice in empowerment of the feminine. For the January 6th show, they decided to welcome the public into the practice. They named the project “ .” The concept is simple- encourage people to try on the headdresses, simple robes and snap a picture while sitting for a photographer or with provided selfie-sticks. All the photos can be tagged and curated on Instagram through the hashtag. Collective members hope to relay ideas of community, equality, empowerment with the title of the project. Over 80 photos are currently posted through the hashtag on Instagram. After such an enthusiastic response from gallery visitors during the opening on January 6th, the collective has decided to hold a second event. They’ll re-create the First Friday event, providing headdresses, robes, photography and self-sticks. With the timing just after the Presidential Inauguration, organizers hope to make a show of unity with the event. They also hope people from the Indiana University community can participate now that school is back in session. Over 13 other artists are featured in the “Fell + 1” exhibit currently being shown at the I. Fell throughout January. The AsGoodAsMine_Collective is a group of local artists seeking to create community around creativity. Co-founders of the collective Amy Burrell and J.Jones are available for media interviews and tours at the I.Fell gallery.
