VIV Arts unveils The Forest of Space Arena by Sou Fujimoto, a modular pavilion that reimagines the relationship between nature and architecture.

Inspired by the way trees define pathways, shape clearings, and frame the sky, The Forest of Space Arena reflects Fujimoto’s vision of architecture as an evolving, porous environment. Composed of a series of natural pine modules, it rises like an abstracted woodland, creating an interplay of light, shadow, and depth.

Sou Fujimoto’s architectural journey is rooted in the fluid beauty of the forest. Growing up in northern Japan, he witnessed how trees create open spaces without rigid boundaries, shaping his vision of architecture as an evolving natural landscape.

As the master plan architect of Expo 2025 Osaka, he brings this vision to life on an unprecedented scale. Spanning two kilometres, the timber ring is both a landmark and a gathering place, shaped by the principles of nature and collective experience. Currently under construction, it will be ready in time for the opening of Expo 2025 on the 13 April.

It is also the starting point for something more, one we look forward to sharing soon.

Wood is the future. Sou Fujimoto pushes it beyond tradition. Stacked, raw, and open, his architecture is reminiscent of a living forest. Space becomes fluid and nature takes centre stage.

“Architectural revolutions have always gone hand-in-hand with materials… Now, wooden construction is coming back. This marks the start of a new phase.”

This spring, we build on this future with Fujimoto. Stay tuned.
