“Every day, somewhere in the world, a soprano wakes up knowing she will have to die of consumption.” 🌹
With more than 500 curtain rises every year, La traviata has become part of the global imagination. But how did the image and even the literal shape we have given Violetta Valéry from the nineteenth century to the present day come into being?
In the September issue of Teatro alla Scala’s Magazine, the “Note d’Archivio” column, curated by Carlo Lanfossi, takes us through the documents of the Archivio Storico Ricordi to retrace a history told through clothes, bodies and gazes, as well as through the men who, for a long time, decided how Violetta should appear.
From Francesco Maria Piave’s letters to Ricordi to the negotiations surrounding the singers; from the costume designs created by Caramba for the 1906 La Scala production, with their meticulously fitted corsets, to the direct gazes of Rosina Storchio and Eleonora Duse from the pages of Ars et Labor.
