Curator Marco Scotini offers an in-depth exploration of the exhibition’s key theme, which is effectively expressed in its title: “Industrial photography is a concept that is deeply integrated into Castella’s work yet possesses its own distinct character, as revealed primarily through an interpretation rooted in the temporality of the photographer’s image.” When talking about industrial photography, the term ‘industrial archaeology’ is often used; the word ‘timeless’ has been brought closer to this idea: we are, in fact, dealing with machinery that has lost its relevance in the contemporary world and that has gradually become embedded in our artificial landscape since the nineteenth century.”

Aurelio Amendola incontra il pubblico per una speciale visita alla mostra “Aurelio Amendola. Capolavori fotografati”, a cui seguirà un firmacopie del volume edito Skira che la accompagna.
Sarà possibile acquistare il volume direttamente al bookshop di mostra, a fine visita.
L’evento è gratuito e non richiede prenotazione.

Sguardo sensibile e intenso, Aurelio Amendola ha attraversato la storia dell’arte con la sua macchina fotografica, trasformando la luce in racconto. Dalle sculture immortali di Michelangelo e Bernini fino alla forza contemporanea di Emilio Vedova e Alberto Burri, le sue immagini rivelano la vita segreta delle opere e il volto degli artisti. Attraverso i suoi scatti, Amendola ha rivelato la materia più viva e segreta del marmo, la sostanza e la materia tangibile: la pelle del David di Michelangelo, l’energia assoluta di Bernini nel Ratto di Proserpina e la sensualità prepotente di Amore e Psiche di Canova. Unica è anche la sua capacità di narrare la storia più privata del “fare arte” di alcuni grandi artisti del XX secolo, da Giorgio de Chirico ad Alberto Burri, da Roy Lichtenstein ad Andy Warhol. Ritratti che hanno segnato la storia dell’arte contemporanea e fissato il potente atto della creazione artistica.

Artworks evoke the fragile and even impenetrable image of collective memory and its conditioning. As the artist states: “In bookshelves, which are already laden with hidden realities, I was fascinated by the seriality of the aligned books. The shadows that multiply the lines on the wall suggested to me the relationship—both symbolic and literal—with the cage.”

“In Vincenzo Castella’s work”, says curator Marco Scotini “there is a constant exploration of the relationship between reality and fiction—between two dimensions whose boundary is difficult to identify. It is enough to think about the color used throughout his photography, and in particular in his industrial images. These nocturnal industrial sites resemble underground villages: places that are entirely artificial and stripped of their natural context in relation to their function. Castella introduces an element of mystery into a highly realistic portrait.”

Vincenzo Castella, describing the artworks on display on the first floor of the exhibition, explains his modus operandi, stating that: “In the works on display, there is an attempt to shift the focus away from the visual subject in favor of a negative space that gradually comes to the foreground in the image. I never look at the center: this is a way of observing that allows me to slow down time and the narrative, and to eventually begin a story not from the beginning, but from the center or the end. It is a paratactic process, which is the foundation of my photography.”

“[…] Era bello vederlo lavorare, ma non parlava affatto”, ricorda Amendola. “Ma meno si parlava meglio era. Poi ogni tanto si alzava e lasciava lì le scarpe intrise di colore, schizzi, di materia organica.” Nasce da questa assenza una delle foto più interessanti, in bianco e nero, profondamente metafisica: una sedia vuota, attorniata da una serie di tele dipinte. Amendola sembra citare i versi di Attilio Bertolucci: “Assenza, più acuta presenza.” Così, le scarpe ci raccontano tanto di Nitsch. E, con quella sedia vuota, viviamo non solo il suo ricordo, ma anche quello di tanti altri artisti, compagni di viaggio, fissati sulle pagine di una intima storia umana. […] ✍🏼 Gianluigi Colin

The “Librerie” presented in BUILDING BOX is created using cotton thread wrapped around an iron core to reproduce the outline of a bookshelf mounted on the wall; A series of books, devoid of volume and weight, are arranged on the shelves.

“Libro nero scritta bianca” presents a reversal of elements: the title emphasizes the chromatic inversion compared to the traditional page, where black text appears on white paper. In this case, the black background becomes the page, and the white emerges as a luminous trace.

“Vincenzo Castella. Timeless Archaeology”

“The first room on the ground floor displays my most recent series of works, which stems from an attempt to understand the linearization of time in which we live,” explains artist Vincenzo Castella. “The artworks depict a compression of the cinematic second: they consist of twenty-four frames per second, with each frame measuring 28 × 52 cm, and the sequence extends approximately seven meters in height.”
