The exhibition invites viewers to interpret this extraordinary body of photographic work through the lens of its own temporality. All these examples of oversized machinery characterized by fluorescent light, displayed at BUILDING GALLERY from the ground floor to the second floor in various formats, offer a truly archaeological approach that highlights the specific nature of memory that informs this body of work, as well as the rest of his oeuvre.

Luigi Ghirri argued that rather than an image of memory, Castella’s photography was an archaeological artifact. “I think of archaeology,” he stated, “as a method of deduction to discover things. Archaeology as a science that aims to describe, reveal, and bring what has happened back into the light of the present.” It is not, therefore, a dimension tied to the past—precisely because these industrial landscapes belong fully to the present—but rather a condition that manifests itself, by its very nature, as already calcified, crystallized, fossilized.

At the heart of this investigation lies a radically de-subjectivized, non-metaphorical gaze, devoid of any mediation other than that offered, in each instance, by the optical properties of the lens used: an optical device that becomes an instrument of measurement and openness, capable of capturing the complexity of reality on film without imposing interpretive readings.

A trent’anni dalla storica mostra “Cappelle Medicee” (1995), Palazzo Reale accoglie nuovamente lo sguardo di Aurelio Amendola con la retrospettiva “Aurelio Amendola. Capolavori fotografati. Burri, Vedova, Nitsch, Duomo di Milano, Bernini, Canova, Michelangelo”, aperta al pubblico da martedì 16 giugno.

Promossa dal Comune di Milano – Cultura e prodotta da Palazzo Reale in collaborazione con Associazione Culturale BUILDING, l’esposizione riunisce 85 fotografie di grande formato realizzate tra il 1976 e il 2025, offrendo un ampio percorso attraverso la ricerca di uno dei più autorevoli protagonisti della fotografia d’arte contemporanea.

Con il suo linguaggio inconfondibile, Amendola attraversa epoche, materie e capolavori, instaurando un dialogo profondo con alcuni dei più grandi artisti della storia. Il percorso espositivo include 35 scatti dedicati ai capolavori scultorei di Gian Lorenzo Bernini, Antonio Canova e Michelangelo Buonarroti, restituendo attraverso la fotografia una lettura intensa e materica della tradizione plastica italiana.

Di particolare rilievo la sezione dedicata al Duomo di Milano, con nove fotografie inedite esposte per la prima volta al pubblico. Attraverso dettagli, prospettive e suggestivi giochi di luce, la cattedrale viene riletta come una grande scultura vivente, in un dialogo particolarmente significativo con Palazzo Reale e con il contesto urbano che la circonda.

Attraverso 85 fotografie di grande formato, realizzate tra il 1976 e il 2025, la mostra celebra gli aspetti più emblematici della ricerca di Amendola (Pistoia, 1938), figura centrale della fotografia d’arte contemporanea che si distingue per la capacità di attraversare la storia dell’arte e trasformare la luce in racconto con uno sguardo sensibile e intenso.

La mostra è promossa dal Comune di Milano – Cultura, prodotta da Palazzo Reale, in collaborazione con Associazione Culturale BUILDING.
In occasione della mostra sarà pubblicato un catalogo edito da Skira, in edizione bilingue.

BOX presents “Per filo e per segno. Percorsi di arte tessile in Italia”, an annual exhibition project curated by Alberto Fiz, involving twelve Italian artists from different generations, invited to reflect on the theme of contemporary .

Created a decade apart, Paola Pezzi’s two works [Passameneria rossa (2015) and Feltro rosso (2025)] represent a consistent and ongoing exploration of the relationship between gesture, material and time, the founding principle of her work: an uninterrupted process of transformation in which each work interacts with the previous one, in an organic, fluid development characterised by continuous metamorphoses.

Paola Pezzi’s works are constructions that treat simple materials—from felt to rubber, from polyurethane to wood—or domestic objects (pencils and woollen gloves) as if they were bearers of memory and energy. Folded, compressed, and wrapped through repeated gestures, each of her works makes time visible and retains the traces of the gesture.

Vincenzo Castella (Naples, 1952), a central figure in contemporary Italian photography, established himself on the international scene in the 1980s, emerging in the context of the landmark 1984 exhibition “Viaggio in Italia”. Within this framework, his work takes the form of a multifaceted exploration of the landscape, developed through a progressive expansion of his fields of interest. Images of urban landscapes—including the well-known “coralline” portraits of cities, begun in 1998—alternate with views of industrial scenes, as in the series of vertical photographs taken in Italy and exhibited on the first floor of BUILDING GALLERY. These are chapters of that “underground journey” into prohibited areas, first identified by Paolo Costantini in 1991, leading up to a more recent focus on the natural landscape, particularly the botanical landscape.
