A Sud dell'Immaginazione (South of Imagination) è un progetto dell'artista Valerio Rocco Orlando, a cura di Raffaella Frascarelli, realizzato grazie al sostegno dell’Italian Council (IX edizione 2020) in partnership con Nomas Foundation. Finalizzato alla creazione di una nuova scuola delle arti a Matera, il lavoro consiste in una piattaforma digitale educativa che unisce diverse comunità all’interno di esperienze laboratoriali condivise, online e in presenza, mobilitando spazi multidisciplinari istituiti da artisti internazionali in territori culturali del Global South. La dimensione processuale della ricerca attinge ai saperi non convenzionali dei quali le demo-diversità dei Sud si fanno portatrici e converge nella produzione di un'opera video destinata alle collezioni del Museo del Novecento di Milano.

L'evento conclusivo restituisce il percorso di tale ricerca attraverso una conversazione a più voci aperta alla cittadinanza.

Valerio Rocco Orlando and South of Imagination at Parsons School of Design

Next week in New York, Valerio Rocco Orlando will introduce his new long-term project, South of Imagination, to students, artists, scholars, activists, and researchers.

On Wednesday, October 5th, the Italian artist will share his practice and methodology for the renowned Parsons Visiting Artist Lecture Series. He will speak about his experience, the conceptual foundations, and the practical aspects of creating a transdisciplinary school as a work of art in the public sphere.

On Friday, October 7th, a symposium organized by Parsons The New School, Nomas Foundation, and the Research Unit "Aesthetics in the Social", DiSSE, Sapienza University of Rome, will consider decolonial pedagogy from the perspective of southern epistemologies and critical urban studies.

We live in a hybrid society claiming the desire to establish, validate, and recognize social understanding as an authentic space of inter-subjective relationship. Such a relevant need detected in the rise of pedagogic art projects has reframed the sociocultural meaning and aims of the contemporary artist's practice. The speakers will address crucial issues involving the reconceptualization of the pedagogical experience through Valerio Rocco Orlando's process of establishing a self-generative, self-reflective, and independent art school in the heart of UNESCO Heritage Sassi di Matera in the South of Italy.

Speakers: Boaventura De Sousa Santos, Sreshta Rit Premnath, Raffaella Frascarelli, Lan Thao Lam, Letteria G. Fassari, Marie Hélène Pereira, Fernando Moral, Pablo Helguera, and Valerio Rocco Orlando.

Supported by the Italian Council (9th Edition 2020), a program that promotes Italian contemporary art in the world by the Directorate-General for Contemporary Creativity of the Italian Ministry of Culture.

In such a complex landscape, where even the Mahraganat music (electronic version of popular Shaabi) is considered immoral and censored—in a place characterized by a strong tendency to diaspora of artists who migrate as soon as they can—foreign cultural centers are spaces of freedom, places to meet and engage with different perspectives. In this sense, there is an urgent need to decolonize our idea of cultural space too, experimenting with new, constructive forms of dialogue and creating opportunities to listen to the territory.

In un panorama così complesso – in cui la stessa musica Mahraganat (versione elettronica dello Shaabi) viene censurata perché immorale – caratterizzato da una forte tendenza alla diaspora di artisti che se possono emigrano oltre confine, i centri di cultura stranieri possono rappresentare luoghi di libertà per un confronto con prospettive differenti. Urgente in quest’ottica è un’attitudine volta a decolonizzare la nostra stessa idea di spazio culturale attraverso la sperimentazione di nuove forme di condivisione utili a creare occasioni di ascolto del territorio.

There are many reasons why we have chosen Egypt, after Albania and Morocco, as the destination for this third phase of our comparative research. What struck us the most was MASS Alexandria, a non-profit space —founded by artist Wael Shawky in 2010— with a vocation for artistic practice, research, and education. Unfortunately, ten years later, this experience has come to an end. It is a common fate for many artist’s initiatives and independent spaces dedicated to experimentation in Egypt.

Le ragioni per cui abbiamo scelto l’Egitto come destinazione di questa terza fase della nostra ricerca comparativa, dopo Albania e Marocco, sono molteplici. Tra tutte, di ispirazione è stata l’esperienza di MASS Alexandria, uno spazio non-profit con una vocazione alla pratica artistica, alla ricerca e alla formazione, fondato dall’artista Wael Shawky nel 2010. Purtroppo, a distanza di dieci anni, l’eccezionale storia di questo laboratorio educativo si è conclusa. Destino comune per molte iniziative di artisti e spazi indipendenti dedicati alla sperimentazione in Egitto.

A few days later, we returned to Tétouan—former capital of the Spanish protectorate, located southeast of Tangier, and home to the Institut National des Beaux-Arts, which was founded in 1945 and is now managed by the Ministry of Culture of the Kingdom of Morocco. INBA is the only school in the area dedicated to art. Hence students from all over the country have to go through a tough selection process to get in. Thanks to the mediation of artist and teacher Younes Rahmoun, we could meet those who attend the school to better understand its organization, the methods applied, and how art is actually perceived by Moroccan society.

A distanza di pochi giorni siamo tornati a Tétouan, ex capitale del protettorato spagnolo a sud est di Tangeri, dove ha sede l’Institut National des Beaux-Arts, un’accademia di belle arti fondata nel 1945, retta oggi dal Ministero della Cultura del Regno del Marocco. INBA è l’unica scuola nel territorio dedicata all’arte e per questo studenti da tutto il paese affrontano un duro processo di selezione per l’ammissione. Grazie alla mediazione dell’artista e docente Younes Rahmoun abbiamo incontrato chi la frequenta, per comprenderne meglio l’organizzazione, le metodologie e come di fatto l’arte viene percepita dalla società marocchina.

In 2016, even before identifying itself within a physical space, Think Tanger was born out of community discussion, driven by the rapid changes taking place in the area. How is it possible to involve citizens so that they rethink the social and urban fabric in which they live by overturning the logic of vertical top-down organization imposed by the public administration? One of the most successful initiatives in this regard is the result of a long-standing collaboration between Think Tanger’s founder, Hicham Bouzid, and the Tamkeen Community Foundation for Human Development in Zouitina. Here adolescents and young adults, students and educators come together to share a common growth process in a space of co-reflection where understanding the other is a deep-rooted and transformative journey.

In tempi più recenti, nel 2016, Think Tanger, prima ancora di identificarsi con uno spazio fisico, nasce dal confronto della collettività sotto la spinta delle rapide mutazioni subite dal territorio. Come è possibile coinvolgere i cittadini a comprendere il tessuto sociale e urbano in cui vivono ribaltando la logica dell’organizzazione verticale, dall’alto verso il basso, dettata dall’amministrazione pubblica? Una delle iniziative più riuscite in questo senso è il risultato di una lunga collaborazione che il suo fondatore Hicham Bouzid ha attivato con Tamkeen Community Foundation for Human Development, nel quartiere di Zouitina, dove adolescenti e giovani adulti, studenti ed educatori si ritrovano per condividere un percorso di crescita comune in uno spazio di co-riflessione in cui la comprensione dell’altro è un processo radicato e trasformativo.

We went back to the roots of the social experiences that give shape to Tangier’s cultural ferment and we identified a constellation of projects in the association Darna, “Our House” in Arabic, founded in 1999 by Mounira Bouzid El Alami, psychotherapist, educator and activist, mother of the artist Yto Barrada. Darna offers a training center, a restaurant, a theatre, and a farm that for years have been a refuge for mothers and children freed from violence and drugs through a form of experimental pedagogy in which art—as a tool for expressing ideas and integrating into society by sharing knowledge without censorship—is crucial.

Siamo risaliti alle radici delle esperienze sociali che sostanziano il fermento culturale di Tangeri per individuare nell’associazione Darna, in arabo “la nostra casa” – fondata nel 1999 da Mounira Bouzid El Alami, psicoterapeuta, educatrice e attivista, madre dell’artista Yto Barrada – una costellazione di iniziative, quali un centro di formazione, un ristorante, un teatro e una fattoria, che da anni costituiscono un rifugio per madri e bambini strappati alla violenza e alla droga attraverso una forma di pedagogia sperimentale in cui l’arte è cruciale, in quanto strumento utile a esprimere le proprie idee e a integrarsi nella società condividendo conoscenza senza censure.
