Schools ruin creativity. This is a statement everyone likes to agree with. We all remember the feeling of being bored and even helpless in a learning environment that doesn’t fit us.
We also know the magic when real learning happens. This moment when you grow in a totally unexpected way, caught by the surprise of a new skill or a change of perspective. But what if creativity is not blocked by authority, but by… lack of intent?
Teaching requires a vision. This vision should be based on experience, trial and error and preparation. The synthesis between them can create a wonderfully unexpected experience that will hit the student like a new genre of music or an ingredient you’ve never tasted before.
The teaching that is mundane, and generic is not happening because of the institution, it happens because of lack of intent and inspiration. Plan out how your students should arrive to what excites you. Create a space where the thing that moves you is the reward of their effort and technical work. The result will be much more powerful than teaching what is ‘correct’ or ‘useful’. As at the bottom line, teaching is the gentle art of guiding as safe as possible into the unexpected.
