In 1974, Andy Warhol got a $1m commission from Italian art dealer Luciano Anselmino.

The brief he received was to forget the soup cans and superstars that had made his name and “take a walk on the wild side“, creating portraits of New York’s hidden community of drag queens.

In 1968, after the assassination of Martin Luther King, Robert Indiana painted one of his first LOVE.
He painted it in black and white.
And he repeated the word LOVE at 360* to make even clearer the universality of the message.

He titled the work
“Love Rising / Black and White Love (For Martin Luther King)”

That painting is now at

In 1971, Robert Indiana decided to repeat this subject for the second and last time.
A screenprint in black and white, signed and numbered out of 200 copies.

Here’s one of those extremely rare copies….
