“Lungo le coste ci sono edifici isolati cilindrici o a pianta quadrata che hanno vegliato sul
mare per secoli: sono le torri costiere, anche chiamate “torri di guardia” o “torri di avvistamento”. Nate con l’obiettivo di contrastare i pericoli che arrivavano dal mare, queste sentinelle individuali facevano parte di un sistema di protezione dalle antiche origini, ma che vide il suo periodo più importante tra il XVI e il XVIII secolo. La loro funzione istituzionale e difensiva cessò nella prima metà del XIX secolo, alcune di queste torri furono utilizzate senza pietà per diverse funzioni, con interventi che ne alterarono parzialmente l’aspetto
originale. Ho preferito concentrare il mio interesse solo su alcune di quelle torri costiere che miracolosamente sono sopravvissute al pericolo per cui sono state costruite. Battute dal
vento del mare, dalle onde e dalla salinità che ha inesorabilmente modificato la loro struttura, riducendole a uno stato di rovina, queste antiche vedette del mare hanno mostrato una straordinaria forza di sopravvivenza: sono ancora braci accese che si
oppongono all’azione inesorabile della natura, rivelando nella loro fragilità una resistenza
ostinata.” (Giancarlo Pradelli)

Giancarlo Pradelli nasce a Modena nel 1966. Già insegnante di fotografia presso l’Istituto
d’Arte della sua città, si è trasferito in America per alcuni anni col fine di approfondire la
tecnica del bianco e nero e del ritratto presso alcuni importanti studi di Boston e di New
York.
Con Five Continents Editions ha pubblicato Eolie (2005), Pierluigi Ghianda (2006) Home
(2012), Temples (2021).
Diverse fotografie sono apparse su prestigiosi magazine internazionali e italiani, come: Life, The Times, Corriere della Sera, La Stampa, Photo, Classic Voice.
Sue immagini sono presenti in varie collezioni pubbliche, fra cui: Galleria Civica di Modena,
Centro Studio e Archivio della Comunicazione dell’Università di Parma, Bibliothèque
Nationale de France a Parigi.

French-Spanish artist photographer FLORE, after working for more than 10 years for the national press, devoted herself exclusively to her personal work in 2008.
Winner of the Prix Nadar (2020), Price of the Fine Arts Academy - Marc Ladreit de Lacharrière (2018), Photofolies Prize, ville de Rodez (1998) and finalist of the Swiss Life Prize for 4 hands (2020) and Hariban Award (2017), her series are carried out over the long term, often during journey, and are acquired or presented in various prestigious institutions such as the Musée du Petit Palais, the MMP+ in Marrakech, the Memorial of Rivesaltes, the National Library of France as well as at international events such as Paris Photo, Photo London, Fotofever, Marrakech Art Fair, Daegu Art Fair or the Snif Art Fair in Osaka.
Through refined technical interventions in the laboratory, even as an alchemist, FLORE shapes as much as she restores the world that unfolds before her eyes to make unique images that depart from conventional photographic reality.
She moves with ease from the oldest techniques such as platinum- palladium or cyanotype to the most modern, sometimes mixing them and physically intervening in the prints with wax or gold.

Alex Webb’s photographs are dense, bright, recounting places and situations in the world down to their most unusual folds. At the beginning of his career, in the mid-seventies, following in the footsteps of his masters, Webb photographs in black and white but soon realized that another language, and a different stylistic code, were closer to his sensitivity. On a trip to Haiti in 1975, Webb changed his way of seeing and photographing. From that moment on, color became an obligatory narrative choice, so much so that it pushed him to look for places where light and colors become, with a sometimes cruel force, basic elements for understanding and describing a territory. Having joined the Magnum agency in 1976, Webb does not like to call himself a photojournalist but rather feels like a street photographer, due to the empathic approach with which he faces every trip, every job. Haiti, the Caribbean, Mexico, Ethiopia, Costa Rica, Brazil, but also Russia and the New England of his origins, are all stages of his photographic reconnaissance. In his images the light is strong, violent, exasperated; enhances shadows and colors. Alex Webb’s photos are complex, full of elements, of reflected surfaces, of openings that multiply the levels of reading.

Janet Sternburg was born in Boston, Massachusetts. She is an American writer of essays, poetry, and memoir, as well as a fine art photographer. Sternburg is the editor of The Writer On Her Work, the first book of commissioned essays on what it means to be a contemporary woman who writes. It has been continuously in print since 1980, and a twentieth anniversary edition was published by W.W. Norton in 2000. Sternburg lives in Los Angeles and San Miguel de Allende, Mexico.

Sternburg’s work has inspired writings by numerous other art historians, cultural critics, neuroscientists, poets, curators, authors, editors, and scholars. She is most often characterized as a poetic photographer, using the visual language of images to reveal odd juxtapositions and radical complexities.

Graduated in photographic arts at the University of Westminster in London, Marcello Bonfanti (1972) explores through his photographs different fields, always permeated by a great sense of composition and proportions, drawing on the Renaissance pictorial tradition. Marcello Bonfanti has been awarded with prestigious awards including the Sony World Photography Award in 2016, first prize in the Arts - Portraiture section; in 2005 World Press Photo, third prize in the Arts and Entertainment section; in 2002 Jack Jackson Award, first prize; 2001 Hodge Award, The Observer, first prize.

Among the many and possible forms of Italian Photography, that of Piergiorgio Branzi embodies the most cultivated and aristocratic one. Growing up surrounded by Tuscany
Renaissance figurative tradition, Branzi has always been endowed with a natural elegance; he soon abandons the more formal research to become a master of “staged portrait”. Monsignors, children, commoners, peasant are all taken by surprise, with a subtle sarcasm; they stand between a quiet lyrism and a vivid psychological characterization.
Branzi’s travel diaries are unforgettable: from the first excursions in Naples and Ischia in
1953 to the trips to Puglia and Lucania in 1955, in Spain in 1956, in Greece in 1957, in India in 1960. Branzi was one of the first Italian photographers to understand the modernity of great foreign authors; with Paolo Monti and Mario Giacomelli was a pioneer in experimenting the use of deep black; he was as well a genial innovator of photography ex-

Vaghe visioni dai contorni indefiniti. Nella nebbia. L’Adriatico, quello che va da Rimini alle lagune del nord, nella morta stagione il più delle volte appare liscio, umido, appena increspato. Senz’onde. Così lo sguardo segue la linea dell’orizzonte che apre a paesaggi minimi, di pochi dettagli, quasi assenti, seppur significativi perché intimi. E’ un paesaggio conosciuto e al contempo sconosciuto. Un paesaggio dell’anima. (Isabella Balena)
