On our way to Puglia we stopped in Matera, Italy; Europe’s oldest city! It’s thought to be the third-oldest city in the world, after Aleppo and Jericho. People have been living in these cave dwellings carved into the mountainside since prehistoric times! It’s been settled since the Palaeolithic period (10th millennium BC) by the troglodyte people.
Matera starred as Jerusalem in Mel Gibson’s ‘The Passion of the Christ’ & the opening scene of the recent Bond movie, ‘No Time To Die.’

The Alpine Herdsman's Playground is 7600 feet in the sky on top of the Männlichen. A 28 ft giant cow with a walk-in interior, a viewing platform on top of the cow and slide down through the mouth of the cow, a seesaw, balance beams, bowling and fun in-ground trampolines that I spent way too much time on. It’s good for the kids to have a break from hiking to have play time! The nearby restaurant had amazing views and even better raclette!

We picked the Mannlichen to conquer first because it had a trail called Lieselotte that had activities for kids, even a scavenger hunt. Aubrey loved seeing all the goats but was sad none of them were fainting goats 🐐 Briella enjoyed the cable car ride up to the top from Grindelwald.

Exploring Interlaken, a Swiss town built in 1133, with no plans other than shopping for a Swiss Army knife for my Dad. Not often do we wander a city with no itinerary other than getting lost and seeing new sites.
My kids love to play in the flower gardens and Briella will always do her typical smelling a flower pose at each garden she finds. 🌹

Switzerland is known for their chocolate so of course we had to take a chocolate making class!🍫 We each got to make our own chocolate bars with whatever toppings we wanted....and got to eat unlimited chocolate while doing it! It was so so so good. During the class, we got to try chocolate in all forms, and I definitely do not care for the coco bean it comes from, but love the result! This was so much fun and such a bucket list activity. We filmed an entire episode here.

Who remembers the book called “Heidi” wrote by Johanna Spyri? Heidi is a young orphan sent to live with her grandfather in the Swiss Alps. My mom read it to me as a child, and then read it to my children as well. I couldn’t wait to take my girls to the Swiss Alps to show them alpine life that they heard about in the story.

The first signs of Spring were happening atop the Mannlichen. The gorgeous mountain flowers were popping up and we had to stop to smell them & breathe in the fresh air! What a perfect moment to rep the with my shirt and hat!
Without the research and development of Surfactant that was funded by the March of Dimes, our little Briella would not be here with us today. But here she is, way high up in altitude where it is harder to breathe, doing great!

After we came back down from the summit of the Mannlichen, we were completely engulfed in the thick clouds. I am thankful I listened to our chalet owners about wearing layers in case the weather changes. When we left, it was so sunny and I wanted to wear a tank top and shorts. I was for sure we were overdressed wearing a long sleeve shirt. When I was looking up at the mountains, all I saw was a sunny day. I didn’t realize we would be on top of the clouds where there was no more sun. There was this one huge hill of snow left, so we carefully trekked to the pole and celebrated that our shoes allowed us to mostly stay upwards. I love the look on the girls faces. They are so proud of themselves! My little micropreemie conquering hikes on the Swiss Alps 🥰
