If you're not familiar with the tale of Carmilla, let me sum it up quickly: the quiet of Laura's life in the Styrian countryside is interrupted by the arrival of a mysterious young woman. An intense, uncanny bond grows between them, and while the protagonist weakens, Carmilla's vampiric nature is revealed. The hunt to kill the monster and save Laura culminates in our abandoned garden, which is a graveyard concealed by nature over time. There, Carmilla is first found, then destroyed. Le Fanu's work sets the themes and the structure for Dracula, which will be published two decades later.
While we've allowed you to become vampires yourselves in some of our past editions, this time we would like to docus on the unsettling garden surrounding the climax of the tale.
Eerie flowers: Flowers. Groundbreaking, right? Well, this time you're not going to be pretty. At least not just that. We sould love to portray the unsettling feeling of the hunters arriving in the garden: at first the blooms look beautiful, but then something underneath gives you goosebumps. Think of memento mori paintings, of venomous plants, of things that show one side to attract and reveal a dradful nature at a closer look.
Sinister Fauna
We did Chimerical as well. We know. But this time we'll be focusing more on things that can be in a garden. Snakes, beetles, snails, ravens and robins. Once again, not those coming from a Disney movie, but rather those from a tale by Edgar Allan Poe.
Dearly Departed
The garden really is a graveyard. Who is sleeping there? Knights and ladies from forgotten times. Are they resting peacefully? Are they haunting the living who walk by?
And you, have you chosen yours?
