The build progressed fast, and we’re already past the painting stage.

I used Ak-Interactive Acrylics to recreate some chipping on the more exposed surfaces, such as the mudguards, the bumper and the steps. Light sand first for the superficial scratches, and then a mix of Dark Rust, Black and Neutral Gray for the darker, deeper ones.

After a first layer of varnish, I applied the decals, and used a Raw Umber pin wash to highlight all the surface details.

I chose to leave the side engine panels open, as it was often done in the field to help it cool down in the desert heat.. and to show all the work I’ve done on it 🥹

I decided to prime the IBG Models with Mr.Hobby - Global Workstation Mr.Mahogany Primer, as the warmth of the brown will give the subsequent yellow a more vivid tone.

I also may have exaggerated with the chipping on the round deck, but I thought it was a good chance to experiment a bit and try new techniques. I used AKs Chipping Fluid, and layered a bottom rusty steel layer, with a cold greyish steel tone, and finally the base paint.

I used Ak-Interactive Real Color Dunkelgelb Initial version as the main colour, as it is a more saturated and yellowish option, closely resembling in my opinion the Italian Saharian Khaki.

While the Macchi is on standby, I got sidetracked again.

As I couldn’t resist starting something new, this time we’re going with a wheeled vehicle: the Lancia 3Ro with 90/53 gun from IBG Models in 1/72 scale.

Did some extra work right from the start: added some copper wire to detail the engine, rebuilt the levers inside the cab from scratch, and put together the 90/53 gun.

Everything was painted with Ak-Interactive 3rd Gen. Acrylics , Real Colors.
Weathered with AK Enamel Effects, and the new Panel Liner range.

Next up, getting ready for primer.

Italeri Official Account - Macchi C.205 1/72 - Recap 3/3

Here’s the Veltro in all its tiny might.

There are a few details left to be added, and then I will finally have the satisfaction to call this build done.

I noticed a bit too late that the flaps are incorrect for a 205 Serie III, as the inner smaller one isn’t straight, but follows the profile of the wing root.

But don’t worry, it was already fixed at the time of making this post. Now the only things missing are the custom unit and serial numbers. See you in the final gallery!

After the final clear matte coat, an announced disaster struck..

I underestimated the decal film, which turned out to be way too thick on the squadron numbers, and it led to severe silvering. The font and size was also wrong, but at the time I chose to keep it as it was.

Anyway, what’s the solution you might ask?
Pressing firmly with tamiya tape, and removing the affected decals.

And now, we wait for a custom replacement, thanks to the huge help of my friend Nikiwinters 🙏🏻

Smoke rings? Amoebas?

Tackling this classic Italian camouflage is always a challenge, especially trying to get those freehand patterns just right without going crazy.

For this stage, I relied entirely on my Harder & Steenbeck Evolution with the 0.15mm needle, spraying highly thinned Tamiya and Gunze paints. Did it test my patience? Definitely.

Working with very low pressure and a steady hand was the only way to keep the lines tight and the overspray in check. I had to do some touch ups on multiple rings, but I guess I’m satisfied now!

Although I had already started scratch building the flaps around 4 years ago, they definitely needed some rework.

So, using images of PE metal sets as a reference, I rebuilt them with 0.2mm Styrene sheets and lots of stretched sprue. Am I going too far? Probably.

I decided not to separate the inner flap from the larger outer part to make painting and assembling easier later on, adding a panel line to show the actual separation.

Hey everyone, I’m back!

So, what started as a “quick cheap build, no big deal” around 4 years ago, has turned into a full scale scratch building, riveting and rescribing exercise.

I have just finished adding rivets to the whole thing, and realized along the way (thanks to some friends that pointed it out) that the kit’s sand filter was a bit too out of scale, and ruined the lines of the engine cowling. So I cloned with epoxy putty the same piece but from the Hasegawa kit, and installed it on the little Veltro. Still far from perfect, but much more streamlined.

Everything looks a bit messy right now, mostly because of the optical mixup between tamiya panel liner and black super glue (oopsie).
