Iniziato nel 1813 grazie alla costituita Società Teatrale Luzzarese, il teatro fu inaugurato solo il 2 ottobre 1852. Negli anni ‘30 e ‘40 erano ospitati spettacoli di varie compagnie di giro e veniva utilizzato come sala da ballo e come cinematografo. Occupato durante la seconda guerra mondiale, all’indomani della Liberazione divenne camera ardente per i partigiani luzzaresi. Negli anni ’70, come
testimoniano le fotografie di Gianni Berengo Gardin realizzate per "Un paese vent’anni dopo", fu persino adibito ad autorimessa. Nel 1988 l’edificio venne acquistato dall’Amministrazione Comunale, che diede inizio a lavori di restauro interrotti poco dopo per mancanza di fondi. Nel 2013 la svolta: una prima miracolosa riapertura, impensabile fino a pochi anni prima, grazie all’idea di recupero di Fondazione Un Paese e al lavoro di un appassionato gruppo di volontari. Da questa prima apertura il Comune di Luzzara ha condotto un progetto di ristrutturazione che alla fine del 2018 ha portato il Teatro alla riapertura, con un’agibilità di 99 posti. Recuperare uno spazio nel cuore del paese, restituirlo ad un territorio, ad una comunità come azione fortemente civile e sociale. Il Teatro Sociale di Luzzara, intitolato a Danilo Donati, è pronto.

The construction began in 1813, thanks to the Luzzara Theatre Company, but the theatre was inaugurated only on October 2, 1852. In the 30’s and 40’s the Theatre hosted plays of various companies and was used as a ballroom and a cinema. During the Second World War it was occupied by soldiers and after the Liberation it became a funeral chamber for the Partisans from Luzzara. After a short time of hosting Carnival and New Year parties, the building was sold to private individuals and turned into a warehouse. In the 70’s it was even used as a garage, as evidenced by the photographs of Gianni Berengo Gardin taken for the book Un paese vent’anni dopo (1976). In 1988 the theatre was purchased back by the Town Hall and started to be restored, unfortunately the works were interrupted shortly after due to lack of funds. In 2013 there was a turning point, a passionate group of volunteers of the Fondazione Un Paese restarted the renovation and managed to reopen for the first time the theatre. The road was already marked by the project “Cantiere Aperto” of the Social Theatre of Gualtieri. The Municipality of Luzzara completed the renovation work and reopened the theatre definitively at the end of 2018, with a capacity of 99 seats. The restoration of one of the most important public spaces in the heart of the town, giving it back to the territory and to the community, was a significant civil and social action. The Social Theatre of Luzzara, named after Danilo Donati, is now ready for its public.
