is celebrating the start of high Summer with a specialist auction of carpets and textiles on Saturday 1 August at 4.00pm. 'Fine Antique Oriental Rugs XXI' is the fifth rug auction from the industrious auctioneers this year and offers 157 weavings consigned from various owners. Although the pieces come from various provenances, late 19th- and early 20th-century weavings from the Caucasus is clearly the main focus of the sale. Of the 95 lots claiming Caucasian heritage, the majority are pile weavings and a quick survey of the online catalogue offers an informative snapshot of Caucasian rugs made in the southwest and east Caucasus at the turn of the 20th century. While there are a number of standard types such as Shirvan and Kuba rugs and larger Kazaks, there are also several more unusual examples such as this Fachralo Kazak rug (lot 76, estimate €5,000-7,000), which has a unique combination of a Fachralo medallion on a blue ground with the hooked medallions and borders typical of Borjalu weavings from further south in the region.

Feature articles on Kashmir shawls, Gujarati embroidery, sacred temple hangings and chintz highlight the wide-ranging nature of the Indian textile tradition.

Rippon Boswell & Co. will hold a ‘Major Spring Auction’ on 27 June 2020, comprising 298 carpet and textile lots. The sale features consignments from the collections of Ferdinand Erblich and Michel Schwalbé, who was the concertmaster of the under Herbert von Karajan. The auction will be held in front of a live audience in the Rippon Boswell salerooms in Wiesbaden.

For more than forty years HALI has found and published some of the most important and beautiful rugs and textiles in the world. The many different paths we have followed to find interesting pieces—auctions, collector meetings and conferences, dealers’ exhibitions and adverts—have been a constant source of wonder and excitement in our pages. Illustrating gems we have discovered and wanted to share has tended to be confined to an appropriate context. Here we are attempting something different. The comments in this series tell of the how and where we have seen pieces, whether in California, Milan, Tokyo or elsewhere, and reflect either the voice of a trusted expert, or our experienced response or reaction to a piece, or indeed our reflections on something that has never been shown before. Third up is a northwest Persian harshang carpet.

Ikat across the globe: In HALI 200, we looked at ikat and other resist-dye textiles, which are culturally ubiquitous. Specific local techniques, whether simple or more intricate, vary widely, but all rely on a few basic principles. For the rest of the week, we will be exploring these cloths from around the world.

During the Qajar period, colourful warp-ikat silk and silk velvet fabrics, used for door curtains (pardeh) and other furnishings, as well as for tailoring into garments, were woven in commercial workshops in the cities of Yazd and Kashan. The cypress trees are traditional Persian motifs of great elegance and beauty.
