The Franco Zeffirelli Foundation is delighted to host “Oriana Fallaci, una donna: una maledetta toscana”, an event organised by the Luigi Einaudi Foundation to mark the 20th anniversary of the death of Oriana Fallaci.

The event will celebrate the renowned journalist and writer, while also recalling the friendship that linked her to Franco Zeffirelli, as well as the deep affection and great professional admiration the Maestro felt for her.

In his autobiography, Zeffirelli remembers Oriana among the Florentine friends who used to gather in the Roman attic where, among others, Piero Tosi, Anna Anni and Mauro Bolognini lived:

“She talked constantly… We never had the time to get to know her better before she had already disappeared. Every now and then, when we least expected it, she would suddenly turn up at our house again; always full of life.”

A brief portrait that captures Oriana Fallaci’s extraordinary vitality and the affectionate memory Zeffirelli kept of her.

La Fondazione Franco Zeffirelli è lieta di ospitare “Oriana Fallaci, una donna: una maledetta toscana”, l’incontro organizzato dalla Fondazione Luigi Einaudi in occasione del ventennale dalla scomparsa di Oriana Fallaci.

Un appuntamento dedicato alla celebre giornalista e scrittrice, che sarà anche l’occasione per ricordare il legame di amicizia che la unì a Franco Zeffirelli, insieme all’affetto e alla grande ammirazione professionale che il Maestro nutriva per lei.

Nella sua autobiografia, Zeffirelli ricorda Oriana tra gli amici fiorentini che frequentavano la soffitta romana dove vivevano, tra gli altri, Piero Tosi, Anna Anni e Mauro Bolognini:

“Parlava in continuazione… Non si ebbe il tempo di conoscerla meglio che era già sparita. Ogni tanto, quando meno ce l’aspettavamo, ci ripiombava in casa; sempre vivacissima.”

Un breve ritratto che restituisce tutta la vitalità di Oriana Fallaci e il ricordo affettuoso che Zeffirelli conservò di lei.

Do you recognize her? 👀

A photograph from the set of The Champ (Il campione, 1979) hides a little curiosity.

Among the people appearing on set is someone very special to Franco Zeffirelli. And, for the occasion, she even plays the role of a nurse.

She is “La Vige”, whose full name was Bianca Bevacqua Edvige Lazzano, the nanny who had been part of Zeffirelli’s life since childhood and remained by his side until the end of his life.

That scene, however, never made it to the big screen: it was cut from the final edit of the film.

But the photograph remains. And it tells us something precious about Franco Zeffirelli: even on set, he loved having the people closest to him around, keeping with him the world of affection that had accompanied him throughout his life.

Having La Vige appear in a scene was also a little game, a shared moment of complicity, one of those gestures that reveal the Maestro’s more playful and affectionate side, far removed from the image of the great director.

For Zeffirelli, family bonds were not something to be left outside the doors of the film studio. They were part of his story, his memories and, in a way, also of his approach to filmmaking.

Even when a scene is cut, a photograph can preserve a story.
And this one gives us, for a moment, Franco and “La Vige” together, on set.

Una fotografia dal set de Il campione (The Champ, 1979) nasconde una piccola curiosità.

Tra le persone che compaiono sul set c’è infatti un volto molto speciale per Franco Zeffirelli. Per l’occasione, veste addirittura i panni di un’infermiera.

È “La Vige”, al secolo Edvige Lazzano, la tata che aveva accompagnato Zeffirelli fin dalla sua infanzia e che rimase accanto a lui fino alla fine dei suoi giorni.

Quella scena, però, non arrivò sul grande schermo: fu eliminata nel montaggio finale del film.

Ma la fotografia è rimasta. E racconta qualcosa di molto prezioso di Franco Zeffirelli: il suo modo di portare con sé, anche sul set, le persone più care e il mondo degli affetti che lo aveva accompagnato per tutta la vita.

Far comparire La Vige in una scena del film era anche un piccolo gioco, una complicità, uno di quei gesti che raccontano il lato più giocherellone e affettuoso del Maestro, lontano dall’immagine del grande regista.

Per Zeffirelli, i legami familiari non erano qualcosa da lasciare fuori dalla porta degli studi cinematografici. Erano parte della sua storia, della sua memoria e, in qualche modo, anche del suo modo di fare cinema.

Anche quando la scena viene tagliata, una fotografia può conservare una storia.
E questa ci restituisce, per un istante, Franco e “La Vige” insieme, sul set.

Teresa Stratas, Violetta. And finally, Franco Zeffirelli’s La traviata.

There was one project Franco Zeffirelli pursued for many years: bringing Giuseppe Verdi’s La traviata to the screen.

As early as 1958, the Maestro had envisioned a film adaptation of the opera, imagining Maria Callas as its protagonist. He wanted to tell Violetta’s story through the language of cinema, expressing his own interpretation of Verdi’s masterpiece on screen.

That project was never realized. Years later, Zeffirelli returned to the novel by Alexandre Dumas fils that inspired La traviata, imagining a new cinematic adaptation, this time with Liza Minnelli. That project, too, remained unrealized.

Then, in 1982, came Teresa Stratas.

Zeffirelli found in her the Violetta he had been searching for and was finally able to bring his project to life. The film was shot at Cinecittà, on sound stages, surrounded by sumptuous sets and costumes designed by Piero Tosi.

Today, the images preserved in the Zeffirelli Archive tell that story: the film poster, Teresa Stratas as Violetta in the final scene, and a portrait of the actress wearing one of the film’s magnificent costumes.

These documents reveal the richness and variety of the Zeffirelli Archive, a heritage directly reflected in the Zeffirelli Museum: photographs, costumes, sketches, models and other materials that offer an insight into the Maestro’s creative process and into everything that lies behind the making of his works.

A heritage to preserve, study and discover.

Some photographs tell the story of a film. Others tell the story of everything that happened around it.

In this 1982 photograph, Franco Zeffirelli and Plácido Domingo, guests on the Italian television programme Domenica In alongside Pippo Baudo, share a moment of laughter while promoting La traviata. A candid image that captures not only the close artistic bond between two great performers, but also a glimpse into the history of Italian television.

Starring the remarkable Teresa Stratas, La traviata was acclaimed internationally and received two Academy Award nominations for Best Art Direction and Best Costume Design.

The Fondazione Zeffirelli Archive preserves photographs like this one: images that document not only the making of the Maestro's works, but also their journey beyond the stage and the film set, through encounters, television appearances, and the cultural life that surrounded them.

Starting Saturday, September 5, our guided tours led by the Fondazione Zeffirelli staff are back, offering the opportunity to discover the Maestro's artistic and personal journey through artworks, sketches, costumes, photographs, and multimedia installations.

C'è tempo fino al 13 settembre per iscriversi a "Come si realizza un documentario", il corso a cura del regista e documentarista Luca Verdone.

Un percorso intensivo di quattro incontri dedicato a chi desidera approfondire il linguaggio del documentario attraverso un'esperienza pratica e un confronto diretto con il docente. Dall'idea iniziale alla sceneggiatura, dalle riprese al montaggio, fino alla proiezione pubblica finale del cortometraggio realizzato durante il corso.

Three photographs. Three behind-the-scenes moments. A journey into the heart of Franco Zeffirelli's cinema.

Selected from the Fondazione Zeffirelli Archive, these images take us back to the set of Endless Love (1981), where the Maestro is seen directing the young stars Brooke Shields, just fifteen years old and already internationally renowned, and Martin Hewitt, making his screen debut. Together, these photographs offer a glimpse into the creative dialogue between the director, his actors, and the crew, where every scene began to take shape.

Based on the bestselling novel of the same name, Endless Love became an international box-office success, grossing more than 30 million dollars in the United States. The film was further immortalized by its iconic theme song, Endless Love, composed by Lionel Richie and performed with Diana Ross, which became a timeless classic.
