In Giant Step, Claudio Cintoli develops a highly distinctive painting technique that pushes the retinal decomposition of the image to an extreme, approaching the logic of photographic reproduction. The pictorial surface is built through the use of screens and layered textures that generate a visual effect reminiscent of American Pop Art.
Although Cintoli spent significant time in New York and absorbed the atmosphere of that cultural moment, his sensibility remained profoundly different. His approach to painting does not celebrate image consumption but rather investigates perception itself. The brushstroke fragments and the color dissolves the image, producing an effect that feels almost photographic.
Cintoli adopts the gaze of a cinematographer: it is as if he is searching for the perfect frame, capturing the subject under artificial light and suspending it in time. There is a palpable sense of stillness — a fleeting moment in which one almost hears the click of the camera shutter.
