Portrayed as a mature bearded man, Zeus sits enthroned in his role as king of the gods. Originally he would have held his attributes: a scepter and a thunderbolt. The colossal god towers over his mortal observers. Documented in the 1570s at Tivoli near Rome, the statue once decorated the gardens of the Villa d'Este. It is named for having been in the collection at Marbury Hall in England.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Although it was carved in a Roman workshop in the first century A.D., the inspiration for this image of Jupiter was a Greek sculpture of the 430s B.C., the monumental gold and ivory statue of Zeus created by the sculptor Pheidias (active 470-420 B.C.) for Zeus's temple at Olympia. Pheidias's Zeus was renowned in antiquity; as one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, many ancient writers praised it and numerous sculptors copied it.

Baldr is son of Odin, and the most loved and beautiful of the Norse gods.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Baldr had recurring dreams of his own death. Since dreams were usually prophetic, this depressed him, so his mother F***g made every object on earth vow never to hurt Baldr. All objects made this vow except mistletoe, since it was too unimportant and nonthreatening to ask.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
When Loki, the mischief-maker, heard of this, he made a magical spear from this plant. He hurried to the place where the gods were indulging in their new pastime of hurling objects at Baldr, which would bounce off without harming him. Loki gave the spear to Baldr's brother, the blind god Höðr, who then inadvertently killed his brother with it. For this act, Odin and the asynja Rindr gave birth to Váli who grew to adulthood within a day and slew Höðr.

Adam and Eve are figures from the primeval history (Genesis 1 to 11), the Bible's mythic history of the first years of the world's existence. The History tells how God creates the world and all its beings and places the first man and woman (Adam and Eve) in his Garden of Eden, how the first couple are expelled from God's presence, of the first murder which follows, and God's decision to destroy the world and save only the righteous Noah and his sons; a new humanity then descends from these sons and spreads throughout the world. Although the new world is as sinful as the old, God has resolved never again to destroy the world by flood, and the History ends with Terah, the father of Abraham, from whom will descend God's chosen people, the Israelites.

Triton was a Greek god and son of Poseidon and Amphitrite. Over time, Triton's class and image came to be associated with a class of mermaid-like creatures, the Tritons, which could be male or female, and usually formed the es**rt of marine divinities. Tritons were a race of sea gods and goddesses born from Triton.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Tritons were the trumpeters of the sea, using trumpets made out of a conch. They would blow this shell throughout the sea to calm the waves, or stir them up, all at the command of Poseidon.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This triton is one of sixteen sculptures that together once formed part of a monumental fountain. It is an uncommon example of a fully anthropomorphised Triton, for they usually has the lower body of a fish.

The story of Andromeda and Perseus is a typical damsel in distress one. Andromeda's mother Cassiopeia boasted that she was more beautiful than the Nereids.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
To punish the queen for her arrogance, Poseidon, brother to Zeus and god of the sea, sent a sea monster named Cetus to ravage the coast of the kingdom of the vain queen. The desperate king consulted the Oracle of Apollo, who announced that no respite would be found until the king sacrificed his daughter, Andromeda, to the monster. She was then chained to a rock on the coast.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Perseus was returning from having slain the Gorgon, Medusa. After he happened upon the chained Andromeda, he held up the head of Medusa to the sea monster, turning it into a giant sandstone statue, which dissolved into the waves. He set Andromeda free, and married her in spite of her having been previously promised to her uncle Phineus.

When Zeus had carried off Aegina, the daughter of Asopus, from Phlius, Sisyphus betrayed the matter to Asopus, and was rewarded by him with a well on Acrocorinthus, but Zeus did not allow this to go unpunished.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Zeus, to avenge his treachery, Death (Thanatos) to Sisyphus, who, however, succeeded in putting Death into chains, so that no man died until Ares delivered Death, whereupon Sisyphus himself also expired. Before he died he desired his wife not to bury him. She having complied with his request, Sisyphus in the lower world complained of his being neglected, and desired Persephone to allow him to return to the upper world to punish his wife. When this request was granted, he refused to return to the lower world, until Hermes carried him off by force; and this piece of treachery is said to be the cause of his punishment.

This painting is one of the most famous depictions of Venus (Greek: Aphrodite). Venus's birth occurred after Saturn (Cronus) castrated his father Caelus (Uranus) and lobbed the severed ge****ls into the sea, which turned into a white foam and grew into the adult form of Venus.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Despite the title, this painting actually doesn't depict Venus's birth, but rather a "Venus Anadyomenes" representation of her first arrival to land from the sea in a scallop shell (representing the female v***a), being pushed in this instance by the breath of the wind god Zephyr and a young female (probably "Aura", the personification of a lighter breeze). On the land the Hora of Spring is awaiting her arrival with clothing.

Raphael depicts here the apotheosis of Galatea as she flees into the sea after transforming her dead lover's blood into the Sicilian sea Acis, of which he became the spirit. Acis was murdered by the giant Cyclops Polyphemus, who jealously crushed the mortal with a giant boulder after learning of Galatea's love for him.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
"I sought him, the Cyclops sought me, endlessly. If you asked, I could not say which was stronger in me, hatred of Cyclops or love of Acis, both of them were equally strong." said Galatea.

Roman theology presents Venus as the yielding, watery female principle, essential to the generation and balance of life. Her male counterparts in the Roman pantheon, Vulcan and Mars, are active and fiery. Venus absorbs and tempers the male essence, uniting the opposites of male and female in mutual affection. She is essentially assimilative and benign, and embraces several otherwise quite disparate functions. She can give military victory, sexual success, good fortune and prosperity. In one context, she is a goddess of prostitutes; in another, she turns the hearts of men and women from sexual vice to virtue.

Cronus (Saturn) learned from Gaia and Uranus that he was destined to be overcome by his own sons, just as he had overthrown his father. As a result, although he sired the gods Demeter, Hestia, Hera, Hades and Poseidon by Rhea, he devoured them all as soon as they were born to prevent the prophecy.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
When the sixth child, Zeus, was born Rhea sought Gaia to devise a plan to save them and to eventually get retribution on Cronus for his acts against his father and children.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Rhea secretly gave birth to Zeus in Crete, and handed Cronus a stone wrapped in swaddling clothes, also known as the Omphalos Stone, which he promptly swallowed, thinking that it was his son.
