Ancient Roots – Amphora III

There are some works that continue to stay with you long after they are finished.

This amphora is one of them.

Born from a reclaimed olive burl collected in the Florentine countryside, it required months of work through turning, drying, carving, and engraving.

It is part of the Ancient Roots series and will be one of the works exhibited at 2026.

The exhibition theme, Light & Shadow, became the starting point for its decoration: on one side, the tree; on the other, its roots. Two inseparable images that speak of what emerges and what remains hidden, of what we see and what we often forget to notice.

These photographs also reveal another aspect of my work: the relationship that develops with a piece during its creation. Hours and hours spent together, until every detail, every grain pattern, and every imperfection becomes familiar.

Then comes the moment to let it go.

And perhaps that is what makes each work so special.

Ci sono opere che, una volta terminate, continuano ad accompagnarti.

Quest’anfora è una di quelle.

Nata da una radica d’ulivo recuperata nelle campagne fiorentine, ha richiesto mesi di lavoro tra tornitura, essiccazione, scultura e incisione.

Fa parte della serie Radici Antiche e sarà una delle opere esposte a 2026.

Il tema della mostra, "Light & Shadow", è stato il punto di partenza della decorazione: da una parte l’albero, dall’altra le sue radici. Due immagini inseparabili che raccontano ciò che emerge e ciò che rimane nascosto, ciò che vediamo e ciò che spesso dimentichiamo.

Queste fotografie raccontano anche un altro aspetto del mio lavoro: il rapporto che si crea con un'opera durante la sua realizzazione. Ore e ore trascorse insieme, fino a conoscerne ogni dettaglio, ogni venatura, ogni imperfezione.

Poi arriva il momento di lasciarla andare.

Light and Shadow

I am particularly happy to share one of the three works from the Ancient Roots series that will be exhibited at 2026.

This amphora is made from reclaimed olive burl collected in the Florentine countryside and explores a theme that feels very close to me and will also be the theme of the exhibition: the coexistence of light and shadow.

On one side, a tree is engraved. On the other, its roots.

I chose to represent them through two opposite engraving approaches.
The tree emerges from a fully carved surface, where the wood becomes visible again while the figure itself remains dark, almost like a shadow held within the material.
The roots, on the other hand, are created by engraving directly into the black band, leaving the dark background intact around them.

Two different ways of expressing what is visible and what remains hidden.
What grows towards the light and what develops silently beneath the earth.

This balance is also present in the wood itself. Bright grain patterns coexist with cavities, cracks and marks left by time. Elements that I do not try to erase, but rather embrace as part of the story of the work.

With Ancient Roots, I continue to explore the dialogue between nature, memory and transformation.

Vestigia Collectible — Villa Marie, Lucca

One of the aspects I appreciate most about exhibitions is the opportunity to personally present my work and engage with those who experience it.

Behind each vessel in the Ancient Roots series there are months of work, but above all thoughts, doubts, intuitions, and reflections that take shape through wood.

During Vestigia Collectible, hosted in the beautiful spaces of and curated by@cosimobonciani, I had the pleasure of sharing with visitors the journey that transforms a reclaimed olive burl into a finished work of art.

It is always fascinating to see how different people find different meanings in the same forms and images.

Perhaps this is what makes the dialogue between the maker and the observer so special.

Uno degli aspetti che apprezzo di più delle mostre è la possibilità di raccontare personalmente le opere e confrontarmi con chi le osserva.

Dietro ogni vaso della serie Radici Antiche ci sono mesi di lavoro, ma soprattutto pensieri, dubbi, intuizioni e riflessioni che prendono forma attraverso il legno.

Durante Vestigia Collectible, ospitata negli splendidi spazi di e curata da , ho avuto il piacere di condividere con il pubblico il percorso che porta una radica d'ulivo recuperata a diventare un'opera finita.

Ogni volta è sorprendente vedere come persone diverse trovino significati diversi nelle stesse forme e nelle stesse immagini.
Forse è proprio questo che rende speciale il dialogo tra chi crea e chi osserva.

Vestigia Collectible — Villa Marie, Lucca.

Sono felice di condividere alcune immagini di , una mostra ospitata negli splendidi spazi di , a Lucca, e curata da .

In mostra sono esposti quattro vasi della serie Radici Antiche, un progetto che nasce dalla volontà di dare nuova forma alla radica d’ulivo recuperata, trasformandola in recipienti ispirati alle antiche ceramiche del Mediterraneo.

Ogni opera porta con sé la memoria del materiale da cui proviene: cavità, crepe e segni del tempo non vengono nascosti, ma accolti e valorizzati come parte integrante del racconto.

Vedere queste opere dialogare con l'architettura e l'atmosfera della villa è stata un'emozione particolare.

Grazie a tutti coloro che sono passati a visitare la mostra.

I’m pleased to share a selection of images from , an exhibition hosted within the beautiful spaces of in Lucca and curated by .

On display are four vessels from my Radici Antiche series, a project born from the desire to give new form to reclaimed olive root burl, transforming it into vessels inspired by the ancient ceramics of the Mediterranean.

Each piece carries the memory of the material from which it originates: cavities, cracks, and traces of time are not concealed, but embraced and celebrated as an integral part of the work’s narrative.

Seeing these works in dialogue with the architecture and atmosphere of the villa was a particularly meaningful experience.

Thank you to everyone who took the time to visit the exhibition.

Radici Antiche — Homo Faber 2026

When I first began working on this amphora in my workshop, it was simply a piece of olive burl collected from the countryside near where I live.

Today, it will be one of the works I will present at Homo Faber 2026.

I am especially happy to take part in this exhibition because I will have the opportunity to exhibit alongside many of the artists, sculptors, and woodturners I have admired for years.

For someone who works with wood every day, often in solitude, seeing their work reach a context like this is truly meaningful.

This amphora is part of the Ancient Roots series, an ongoing exploration born from the encounter between material, memory, and storytelling, allowing the wood itself to guide much of the creative process.

I look forward to sharing these works with the public.

Quando ho iniziato a lavorare questa anfora nel mio laboratorio, era soltanto un pezzo di radica d’ulivo raccolto nelle campagne vicino a casa.

Oggi sarà una delle opere che presenterò a Homo Faber 2026.

Sono particolarmente felice di partecipare a questa mostra perché avrò l'opportunità di esporre accanto a molti degli artigiani, scultori e tornitori che negli anni ho ammirato e da cui ho imparato moltissimo.

Per chi lavora il legno ogni giorno, spesso in solitudine, vedere il proprio lavoro arrivare in un contesto come questo è qualcosa di speciale.

Questa anfora fa parte della serie Radici Antiche, una ricerca che nasce dall'incontro tra materia, memoria e racconto, lasciando che sia il legno stesso a guidare gran parte del processo creativo.

Non vedo l'ora di condividere queste opere con il pubblico.

Radici Antiche

Negli ultimi mesi ho affidato a questi tre vasi pensieri intimi e profondi.

Un abbraccio e una distanza.
Una mano tesa e l'indifferenza.
Una voce che si libera e una che rimane trattenuta.

Ognuno racconta una riflessione diversa, ma tutti parlano dell'essere umano e delle contraddizioni che ci accompagnano ogni giorno.

Queste opere sono state esposte per la prima volta a , in occasione dell'evento , con la curatela di .

Come tutta la serie Radici Antiche, anche queste opere nascono dalla radica d'ulivo, una materia antica, nascosta e complessa che trasformo in forme ispirate alla ceramica del mondo greco-romano.

Attraverso l'incisione, il legno diventa racconto.

Forse è anche per questo che continuo a lavorarlo.
Per trasformare ciò che sento, osservo e vivo in qualcosa che possa essere condiviso.

Non per dare risposte, ma per lasciare spazio a una riflessione.

Torniti in radica di ulivo, scolpiti e incisi a mano.

Ancient Roots

Over the last few months, I have entrusted these three vases with thoughts I would have otherwise struggled to express.

An embrace and a distance.
A hand reached out and indifference.
A voice breaking free and one held back.

Each one tells a different story, yet they all speak of the human being and the contradictions that accompany us every day.

These pieces were exhibited for the first time at Villa Marie, Tuscany, during the event, curated by Cosimo Bonciani.

Like the entire Ancient Roots series, these works are born from olive burl — an ancient, hidden, and complex material that I transform into forms inspired by Greek and Roman pottery.

Through engraving, wood becomes a narrative.

Perhaps that is also why I continue to work with it:
to transform what I feel, observe, and experience into something that can be shared.

Not to provide answers, but to leave space for reflection.

Radici Antiche – Anfora

Aprire.
Chiudere.

Trattenere qualcosa dentro.
Lasciare uscire qualcosa.

Alcune cose rimangono nascoste.

Pensieri, parole, emozioni.

Quest’anfora nasce da una riflessione sull’espressione e sul silenzio, su ciò che scegliamo di mostrare e ciò che teniamo dentro di noi.

Forse è anche per questo che aveva bisogno di un coperchio.

Con il tempo ho capito che realizzare questi vasi è diventato anche il mio modo di dare forma ai miei pensieri.

Tornita in radica di ulivo, scolpita e incisa a mano.

To open.
To close.

To keep something inside.
To let something out.

Some things remain hidden. Thoughts, words, emotions.

This amphora stems from a reflection on expression and silence—on what we choose to reveal and what we keep within ourselves.

Perhaps that is also why it needed a lid.

Over time, I have come to realize that crafting these vessels has also become my way of giving shape to my thoughts.

Amphora

Negli ultimi anni mi sono trovato spesso a riflettere su quanto sia difficile esprimere ciò che pensiamo davvero.

Ci sono momenti in cui sentiamo il bisogno di parlare, di essere ascoltati, di dare voce a ciò che abbiamo dentro.

E altri in cui scegliamo il silenzio. Per paura, per prudenza, o semplicemente perché pensiamo che nessuno ascolterà.

Per questo ho scelto di rappresentare due immagini opposte: da una parte un uomo che urla, dall'altra un uomo che si copre la bocca con le proprie mani.

Con il tempo ho capito che realizzare queste opere è diventato anche il mio modo di esprimermi. Un modo per trasformare pensieri, dubbi e osservazioni in qualcosa di tangibile, affidandoli al legno invece che alle parole.

Tornita in radica di ulivo, scolpita e incisa a mano.

In recent years, I have often found myself reflecting on how difficult it can be to express what we truly think.

There are moments when we feel the need to speak, to be heard, to give voice to what we carry inside.

And others when we choose silence. Out of fear, caution, or simply because we believe no one will listen.

For this reason, I chose to depict two opposing images: on one side, a man shouting; on the other, a man covering his mouth with his own hands.

Over time, I have come to realize that creating these works has also become my own way of expressing myself. A way of transforming thoughts, doubts, and observations into something tangible, entrusting them to wood rather than words.

Ci sono momenti in cui una mano tesa può cambiare tutto.

Osservando le persone, mi capita spesso di notare due atteggiamenti opposti.

Chi si ferma.
E chi prosegue.

Chi tende una mano.
E chi sceglie di non vedere.

Forse questa decorazione nasce proprio da questa osservazione.

There are moments when a helping hand can change everything.

Observing people, I often notice two opposite attitudes.

Those who stop.
And those who keep walking.

Those who offer a hand.
And those who choose not to see.

Perhaps this decoration was born from that simple observation.
