The 3D4Amb project aims at developing a system based on the 3D for the diagnosis and treatment of amblyopia in young children. It exploits the active shutter technology to provide binocular vision, i.e. to show different images to the amblyotic (or lazy) and the normal eye. It would allow easy diagnosis of amblyopia and its treatment by means of interactive games or other entertainment activities.

It should not suffer from the compliance problems of the classical treatment, it is suitable to domestic use, and it could at least partially substitute occlusion or patching of the normal eye. Il progetto 3D4Amb mira a sviluppare un sistema basato sul 3D per la diagnosi e il trattamento dell’ambliopia nei bambini piccoli. Sfrutta la tecnologia 3D active shutter per garantire una visione binoculare, cioè per mostrare immagini diverse all’occhio normale da quello pigro. Essa dovrebbe consentire una facile diagnosi dell’ambliopia e il suo trattamento per mezzo di giochi interattivi e attività di intrattenimento. Non dovrebbe soffrire dei problemi del trattamento classico dell’occlusione, è adatto ad un uso domestico, e potrebbe, almeno in parte sostituire l’occlusione dell’occhio normale.

A Low-cost Virtual Reality Game for Amblyopia Rehabilitation

The paper presents the design and development of a mobile application realizing a video game that aims at treating amblyopia by using a Google Cardboard. Google Cardboard is a low cost device able to reproduce virtual reality by means of a smartphone. The proposed video game engaged the patient in a car racing game and it displays the same image to the eyes, but with some differences that stimulate the lazy eye more than the normal eye.
