At the Teatro di Via Bissolati 35, Valerio Nicolai presented Cheese, a performance that investigates the mechanisms of representation and the construction of collective imagery. Participants, arranged on a hand-painted tiered wooden structure, form a kind of staged group portrait: ordinary individuals with no prior connections or shared affiliations, brought together solely through their presence within the artwork.
While evoking the familiar imagery of the commemorative group photograph, the performance subverts its conventions, as the participants are not there to be photographed but rather to return the gaze of the viewer. The title, Cheese, ironically references the expression commonly associated with group photos, while stripping it of its original meaning and heightening the ambiguity of a scene in which the subjects’ faces remain resolutely serious.

Al Teatro di Via Bissolati 35, Valerio Nicolai ha presentato Cheese, una performance che indaga i meccanismi della rappresentazione e della costruzione dell’immagine collettiva. I partecipanti, disposti su una struttura lignea a gradoni dipinta a mano, compongono una sorta di falsa foto di gruppo: persone comuni, prive di legami o appartenenze condivise, riunite unicamente dalla loro presenza nell’opera. Pur evocando l’immaginario della fotografia commemorativa, la performance ne sovverte le dinamiche, poiché i soggetti non sono lì per essere fotografati, ma per ricambiare lo sguardo del visitatore. Il titolo, Cheese, richiama ironicamente l’espressione associata alle fotografie di gruppo, ma ne svuota il significato originario, accentuando l’ambiguità di una scena in cui i volti restano sempre seri.
